A linear motor actuator for a magnetic read/write head has its stator located between a pair of disks within a stack of magnetic recording disks. The stator comprises an array of reversed polarity magnets 42,43 (preferably permanent) in a linear array, the two end magnets 42' being half the width of the others. A pair of flat coils 24, 25 are the drive elements of the armature of the motor with the coils arranged in side-by-side relationship for bridging from magnet to magnet of the stator, so that the armature will not stall between magnets. The actuator is controlled by an external microprocessor electronic control system for selecting any position precisely, rather than in steps as in a stepping motor. The microprocessor effects servo control of the actuator and its direction of motion based upon feedback signals. The stator arrangement including plates 41,42 and end magnets 42' reduce fringing flux thereby allowing said stator location between the associated pair of disks.

A method and means is described for writing data on a recording medium, such as a disk or tape, containing servo samples in such manner that the number of servo samples is increased with a minimal increase in overhead (non-data) regions. The tracks on the medium are divided into a plurality of maxi sections, each of which contains all fields with servo and associated overhead information and also a data field. At least one micro servo section containing only a portion of said information is located within each data field. As each micro servo section passes by an associated recording head, writing and reading of data is temporarily interrupted, but resumed when the micro servo section moves beyond the head, in such manner as to require minimal resynchronisation of said data during reading. Using a phase continuous clock, data is written in both portions of a data field to either side of each micro servo section in one pass of the disk or tape relative to the head. The micro servo sections contain no timing reference address mark and require no data encoder/decoder flush or synchronisation byte to resume reading in the portion of the data field following each micro servo section.

The moving part of the actuator is provided with a plurality of coils mounted thereon, at least two of which are energised simultaneously and in magnetically opposing relationship to reduce the amplitude of the stray magnetic fields. Movement of the actuator is achieved by both energised coils interacting with a set of alternating poles positioned on the stationary part of the actuator.

A data recording medium including a structure providing variable electromagnetic property (variable, resistance, capacitive, or other variable impedance or other variable electromagnetic property) contrast on the surface marking servo tracks. Such media include magnetic or optical storage disks and tapes. The media can be conductive metallic or nonmetallic and can be composed for example of poorly conductive media, dielectric media, or semiconductive media. The variable electromagnetic impedance can vary in the optical, electrical or other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A very small variation of the thickness of the protective layer above the magnetic recording medium is employed to mark the servo track information of the medium. Information to be detected by means of a capacitive sensor can be recorded in the protective layer above or below the magnetic recording or optical storage medium. For example, a thin film metallic protective layer 0.07 micrometers thick can be patterned with about 0.02 micrometers of the protective layer. For a plated disk, the top 0.02 micrometers of the protective layer can be patterned. A pattern for providing a variable impedance for representing data can be formed subtractively by sputter etching, or additively formed by a lift-off process or by deposition through a mask, or by the oxidation of or nitriding of materials such as Al, Si or valve metals.

The top drawing shows a magnetic head structure having means for detecting small capacitive variations which can be processed to give positional information about the head. The head comprises a substrate 32 carrying pole pieces and their associated pick-up coil 38 and contact pads 36,37. The detecting means comprise a coil 26 providing an inductive reactance which is connected between a ground pad 23 and a capacitive pick-up electrode 24. The coil is inductively coupled to input arrangement 27 and to output arrangement 28. The other drawings show the equivalent circuit diagram. In use of the structure an oscillator is coupled to the input arrangement 27 and suitable circuitry connected to output arrangement 28 to detect amplitude modulation of the signal induced therein. These modulations L provide information about the detected capacitive variations.
