A variable-length coding apparatus for dividing an input signal into a plurality frequency bands, each comprising coefficient data, quantizing the coefficient data for each frequency band, and coding the quantized coefficient. This apparatus comprises a zero judge means for judging whether each coefficient data is zero or not; a code table storing code words used whens coding of the coefficient data is performed; a coefficient coding means for coding the coefficient data using the code table when the zero judge means judges that the coefficient data is not zero; a zero counting means for counting the number of successive zero, when the zero judge means judges that the coefficient data is zero, until the zero judge means judges that the coefficient data is not zero; a group table for managing successive zero lengths (zerorun lengths) of all coefficient data in each frequency band, wherein one table number is assigned to one zerorun length and one table number is assigned to one group of a plurality of zerorun lengths; a zerorun grouping means for deciding a group number corresponding to the successive zero number counted by the zero counting means, using the group table; and a zerorun coding means for coding the successive zero number, using the group number decided by the zerorun grouping means, and the code table. In operation, the coefficient data to be zeroruns are classified into groups according to the data size, using the group table and, thereafter, the coefficient data are coded. Therefore, even a long zerorun can be compressed with high efficiency using a small-sized zerorun table.

An optical disk for recording stereoscopic videos and high-quality video signals and a system for reproducing the videos and signals from the optical disk are made compatible with the conventional video reproducing system. A reproducing device which is used for reproducing stereoscopic videos and high-quality videos obtains stereoscopic video or high-quality videos by reproducing both first and second interleaved blocks on the optical disk in which first and second video signals are alternately recorded on the left and right sides by dividing the first and second video signals into frame groups of one GOP or more and a reproducing device which is not used for reproducing the stereoscopic videos and high-quality videos obtains ordinary videos by only reproducing either the first or second interleaved block by jumping tracks.

An authoring system wherein various processes are applied to a bit stream which conveys information including moving picture data, audio data and auxiliary picture data which constitute titles each having a series of correlated contents, a bit stream is generated in order to produce a title which has a content meeting the request of the user, the generated bit stream is efficiently recorded on a predetermined recording medium, and the title content which meets the request of the user is further reproduced from the generated bit stream. The user inputs through input means such as a keyboard the edit of the content of the multimedia bit stream which is source data, the inputted content of edit is converted into authoring encode parameters, it is judged whether or not the content of edit satisfies the conditions specified by the data structure etc. based upon the authoring system or not, and, if not, the judgement is fed back to the user to prompt the user to input the edit information again.

An encoding method which enables smooth picture reproduction even when a stream comprising mutually-connected and individually-encoded video streams is continuously decoded. An encoding device, recording method, recording medium, and reproducing method used for the encoding method are also disclosed. The data occupation amount (Vdv) in a decoding buffer memory (2600) provided before a decoder for decoding coded data is set at a prescribed initial occupation amout (Bi) immediately before the decoding of the coded data of each picture group. The amount (Vdv) is found for every second prescribed period. The amount of assigned data is determined so that the amount (Vdv) immediately after the decoding of the coded data is larger than a prescribed final occupation amount (Bt) (Bt > Bi).
