A varnish comprising a base substance consisting of a polymer or oligomer of 200 to 50×10 4 molecular weight or organic compound of 200 to 1000 molecular weight and a solvent containing a good solvent and a poor solvent whose boiling point (under 760 mmHg) is at least 20°C lower than that of the good solvent, wherein the base substance is dissolved in the solvent. Any thin film prepared from this varnish is substantially from generation of foreign matter, so that it can appropriately be used as thin films for electronic devices and those for use in other technical fields.

Disclosed is a charge-transporting organic material which contains a compound with a 1,4-dithiin ring which is represented by the formula (1) below. By using a thin film made of such a organic material in a small-molecule organic electroluminescent device (OLED) or a polymer organic electroluminescent device (PLED), there can be improved EL device characteristics such as low driving voltage and high luminous efficiency. Meanwhile, a charge-transporting varnish containing the compound with a 1,4-dithiin ring represented by the formula (1) below has good processing properties. Consequently, a thin film made from such a vanish has high charge-transporting characteristics and thus is useful when applied to protective films for capacitor electrodes, antistatic films, solar cells or fuel cells.

An aligning agent for liquid crystals which, when used for liquid-crystal display elements operating in the in-plane switching mode, is excellent in printability and rubbing resistance and reduced in residual image and image persistence; a liquid-crystal alignment film; and a liquid-crystal display element of high display quality employing the film. The aligning agent comprises both of a unit structure of a polyamic acid or polyimide having the tetravalent organic group constituting an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a unit structure of a polyamic acid or polyimide having the tetravalent organic group constituting an alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid. The alignment film is formed by applying the aligning agent to a substrate, burning the agent applied, and then rubbing the resultant film. The liquid-crystal display element operating in the in-plane switching mode is fabricated with the liquid-crystal alignment film.
