    Abstract: This invention teaches methods and apparatus for providing a low cost, low complexity, and low component count transmitter feedback function for use in mobile station transmitter linearization and self-test operations. Disclosed is a method for operating a mobile station of a type that includes a transmit chain having an output coupled to an antenna and a receive chain having an input coupled to the same or a different antenna. The method includes steps of: during a transmission time, (a) sampling an amplified signal prior to the amplified signal being applied to the antenna for transmission from the transmit chain; (b) downconverting a frequency of the sampled amplified signal to a lower frequency signal using a receive chain local oscillator signal normally used for downconverting a received signal to the first IF; and (c) demodulating the lower frequency signal to a baseband signal with a receive chain demodulator by using a second local oscillator signal that is normally used as a transmit chain modulator injection frequency signal. A further step of the method determines from the baseband signal an amount of predistortion of an input signal to the transmit chain in order to obtain a desired amount of linearization of the amplified signal.

    Abstract: A dual-mode radiotelephone terminal includes a π/4-shift DQPSK modulator (11). A dual-mode modulation is achieved by mixing an output of a transmitter oscillator (16) with an output of an offset oscillator (18) to form an injection signal (LO) at a final transmitter frequency, the injection signal being further modulated with a quadrature modulator in a digital mode of operation. In the analog mode of operation the transmitter oscillator or offset oscillator is frequency modulated and the quadrature modulator is disabled, thereby passing the frequency modulated injection signal without substantial attenuation. The LO signal is regenerated and also phase shifted with a circuit (35) having a frequency multiplier (30) and a frequency divider (34). The circuit outputs two local oscillator (LO) signals (LOA and LOB), each of which directly drives an associated quadrature mixer (36, 38) of the modulator. In a further embodiment of the invention the dual-mode radiotelephone terminal includes a VHF synthesizer (23), a UHF synthesizer (21), and a local oscillator (4C) that provides a signal only when operating in the analog receiving mode. The local oscillator signal is mixed with a first IF signal for providing a second IF signal when operating in the analog receiving mode or in a standby mode. The first IF frequency is provided by a standard IF filter (45 MHz) when operating in either the digital or the analog mode of operation. The output of the VHF synthesizer is divided (22) and used as an input to a mixer (4F) that provides a second IF signal when operating in the digital receiving mode. A control signal is employed for selectively enabling and disabling various of these components as a function of the operating mode, thereby conserving power.

    Abstract: A dual band user terminal (10) includes a controller (18) for outputting a BAND signal for specifying operation in one of a first frequency band or a second, higher frequency band; a single frequency synthesizer (46) that is responsive to the BAND signal for outputting an RF signal in one of two frequency bands; and an RF transceiver (11) comprising a dual band receiver that receives RF signals in the first frequency band and in the second, higher frequency band, and a dual band transmitter that transmits RF signals in the same frequency bands. The dual band receiver includes a first receiver chain that operates in the first frequency band as a single conversion receiver having a downconversion mixer that is preceded by a first filter and that is followed by second filter, and a second receiver chain that operates in the second frequency band as a dual conversion superheterodyne receiver having a first downconversion mixer preceded by a first filter and followed by a second filter coupled to a second downconversion mixer followed by a third filter. The downconversion mixer of the single conversion receiver is also the second downconversion mixer of the dual conversion superheterodyne receiver, and the second filter of the single conversion receiver is also the third filter of the dual conversion superheterodyne receiver. The dual band transmitter includes a modulator that outputs a modulated RF signal. When operating in the first frequency band the input RF signal to the modulator has a frequency that is equal to the transmitted RF signal, and when operating in the second frequency band the input RF signal has a frequency that is equal to one half of the transmitted RF signal.

    Abstract: A diplexer (44) for coupling plural electronic circuits to a common antenna (46), wherein the antenna has at least a portion which is in the shape of a rod. The diplexer includes a set of dielectric sleeves encircling the rod-shaped portion of the antenna. The diplexer is constructed of plural branches (46a, 46b), each of which has a filter for passing signals in a portion of the spectrum different from the portions of the spectra passed by other ones of the branches. Inductors and capacitors employed in respective ones of the branches are formed by electrical elements disposed on surfaces of the sleeves. Such elements include bands of electrically conductive material which serve as plates of capacitors, and elongated conductive strips which serve as inductors. Resistive material may also be placed on surfaces of the sleeves for construction of resistors of the branches in the event that such resistors are required in the electrical filtering. In the case of a portable electronic component, such as a radiotelephone having a housing (50) with an antenna extending therefrom, the construction of the diplexer (44) provides for a compact configuration enabling use of the diplexer (44) without enlargement of the housing (50) and without inconvenience to a user of the radiotelephone.
