A developing unit uses liquid toner as a liquid developing solution to form toner images according to electric fields generated between it and photosensitive drums. An intermediate roller (15) receives transferred toner images according to electric fields between it and photosensitive drums. A transfer-fixing unit further transfers a toner image on the intermediate roller onto an intermediate transfer belt (16) and fusion-transfers it onto a printing medium. Photosensitive drums (11-14), provided for each of a plurality of color-toners, transfer toner images formed thereon onto the intermediate transfer roller one by one for subsequent overlapping. With the intermediate transfer roller kept at a ground level, voltages controlled according to electric characteristics specific to respective color toners on the plurality of photosensitive drums are applied to the drums to thereby produce electric fields required for transfers onto the intermediate transfer roller. In addition, a toner coagulation increasing device is provided that increases the toner coagulation of a toner image on the intermediate transfer roller so as to prevent the reverse-transfer of toner images, transferred previously on the intermediate transfer roller, onto the photosensitive drums.

Liquid toner is supplied onto an image support on which an electrostatic latent image is formed and a developed toner image is transferred to an intermediate transfer body before being transferred and fixed onto a print medium at a transferring/fixing section using a backup roller. The print medium is preheated up to a temperature required for transferring/fixing the toner image before being carried to the transferring/fixing section. The transferring/fixing section is not provided with a heating means and a high pressure in the range of 10-60 kg/cm is set between the intermediate transfer body and the backup roller. Alternatively, the intermediate transfer body is provided with a heating means and the softening temperature of resin for use in the liquid toner is set not higher than the heat resisting temperature of other members, e.g. a photosensitive drum, and the temperature of the intermediate transfer body is set to not lower than the softening temperature of resin but not higher than the heat resisting temperature of other members.

A liquid developing electrophotographic device comprising an applicator roller for carrying a liquid toner in uniform thin layer form onto a developing roller to apply it to the latter, and a conductive blade for contact with a liquid toner layer on the developing roller. A predetermined amount of liquid toner is passed between the conductive blade and the developing roller, and a voltage is applied to the conductive blade so that a state in which the toner particles contained in the liquid toner become sparse is established on the uniform thin layer-like toner layer surface on the developing roller. Thereafter, the liquid toner, on whose surface is established the state in which the toner particles are made sparse, comes in contact with an image substrate to effect development.
