One of the problems in display devices is that the black level is different for each type of display tube and is also dependent on temperature and ageing. The display devices hitherto known with black level setting circuits apply one control voltage to the relevant cathode during the field blanking interval, whereafter the cathode current is measured and subsequently compared with a reference current. Subsequently, the black level is adapted until the measured current approximately corresponds to the reference current. The display device according to the invention includes a black level setting circuit with control means which are adapted to successively apply at least two control voltages in a predetermined ratio to the cathode. Moreover, the black level setting circuit comprises a correction circuit for supplying a correction value dependent on the ratio between the currents generated in the relevant cathode in response to said at least two control voltages.

A picture display device includes a generator (3, 4, 5) for generating a periodical staircase-shaped signal for addressing picture elements on display screen. The initial value of the staircase shape is settable and a stepwise change takes place each time upon the occurrence of clock pulses. The height of the steps is determined by the following measures: - measuring the value of the staircase shape at a predetermined measuring instant or measuring the instant when the staircase shape is at a predetermined level, - comparing the measured quantity with a predetermined target value, - deriving a new value from this comparison and from the set initial value for the height of the steps of the staircase shape, for which new value the difference between the measured quantity and the target value has a predetermined value, and - setting the height of the steps of the staircase shape at this new value.

Circuit arrangement comprising a parabolic generator (2) for supplying a periodic, substantially parabolic signal to an output terminal during the trace time and an arcuate signal generator (3) for supplying an arcuate signal, which has the shape of, for example, half a sine wave, during the retrace time. At the start of the retrace time the arcuate signal and its derivative are given values which are substantially equal to the corresponding values of the parabolic signal at the end of the trace time. The arcuate signal generator is adapted to generate the arcuate signal in a time-discrete manner under the control of switching pulses supplied by a pulse circuit (4). The pulse circuit (4) is adapted to supply such a constant number of switching pulses for generating the arcuate signal at a variable retrace time that the arcuate signal and its derivative assume values which are substantially equal to the corresponding values of the parabolic signal at the start of the trace time.

The clock pulses applied to the sawtooth generator (1) are then distributed as regularly as possible.

To reduce both the number of capacitors and the number of connecting terminals, the circuit comprises a sawtooth generator (1), a combining stage (2, 5-8), a multiplying circuit (12) and an amplifier (18). Applied to the combining stage (2, 5-8) is a sawtooth signal generated by the sawtooth generator (1) and also a sawtooth signal originating from a feedback (26) and the combining stage (2, 5-8) generates three linear combinations of these input signals. Two linear combinations are applied to the multiplying circuit (12) for obtaining a parabolic signal which is applied to a signal input terminal (20) of the amplifier (18), whereas the third linear combination is applied to the feedback input terminal (19) of the amplifier (18). The series arrangement of the deflection coil (24) and a seperating capacitor (25) is coupled to the output terminal (22) of the amplifier (18), a feedback network (26) being included between the said series network and the combining stage.
