A system is provided that includes a user equipment (10) configured to attempt a quality measure of a signal from a home local network (20) only when the user equipment (10) is within range of the home local network (20). A technique to determine whether a UE is near one of its home local networks involves the use of a server computer or other network component that is associated with a home local network. Such a component might be aware of the physical locations of a user's home local networks and might also be aware of, or be able to ascertain, the cell in which the UE is currently located. A UE might query such a component to determine if a signal qwuality measurement should be made. The component might then determine whether the UE is located in one of its home local networks and, if so, might cause or allow a signal quality measurement to be made.

A method for preventing a relay node from missing a transmission from an access node. The method includes, when a ten millisecond periodicity is used for Multicast/Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframes, setting a time between an uplink grant from the access node to the relay node and an acknowledgement/negative-acknowledgement message (ACK/NACK) from the access node to the relay node equal to ten milliseconds. The method further includes, when a forty millisecond periodicity is used for MBSFN subframes, the access node sending the relay node an asynchronous grant for an uplink retransmission when a data packet is missed, and when the relay node receives the grant for the uplink retransmission, the relay node retransmitting the missed data packet.
