The invention relates to a sensor element for a gas sensor for determining the physical property of a test gas, particularly the concentration of a gas constituent in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines. The sensor element comprises an, in particular, laminated ceramic body (11) with a test gas space (12) that is in contact with the test gas via a diffusion barrier (21). In order to obtain a gas permeability of the diffusion barrier (21) that is necessary for a controlled gas diffusion within narrow manufacturing tolerance limits so that a subsequent trimming or calibration of the manufactured sensor element can be eliminated, cavities are formed in the diffusion barrier (21) in a defined geometric order. The cavities are preferably provided in the form of fine branched channels (30) on the scale of micrometers that, due to their shape and arrangement, enable the desired gas permeability to be determined in a highly precise manner.
