The invention also relates to a control device which puts into practice the claimed method for adapting the machine configuration in generators comprising excitation windings which are controlled by a control device. The current output upper limit is registered as either a fixed value or as a generator-specific value, for example on the band end of the control or generator fabrication.

The digital pulse width modulator used is part of an exciter current regulating circuit that uses the generator voltage as real value and regulates the pulse width duty factor depending on the sensed generator voltage. In addition, the system is dampened in that a whole duty factor period can be overridingly switched off. The duration of the overridingly switched off period can be adapted to the duty factor, so that voltage is changed independently of the duty factor.
