The illumination device (10) includes the optical component (15) having an average reflectance in the wavelength range 400 nm to 500 nm lower than an average reflectance in the wavelength 500 nm to 800 nm, a fluorescence generator (18), a wavelength selector (16) having a first area (163) and a second area (161, 162, 164), a polarization converter (14) and an optical-path switcher (13). The wavelength selector (16) alternately sets the first area (163) and the second area (161, 162, 164) in an optical path of a first light in a temporal manner. The illumination device (10) switches a first optical path and a second optical path based on a setting of the wavelength selector (16).
