Process for synthesizing polyol fatty acid polyesters which includes the steps of reacting an excess of lower alkyl ester with polyol to esterify hydroxyl groups thereof and form polyol fatty acid polyester, separating at least a portion of the unreacted lower alkyl ester from the polyol fatty acid polyester, and recycling the separated unreacted lower alkyl ester for further reaction with polyol or partially esterified polyol. The recycled lower alkyl ester is substantially free of lower alkyl ester degradation reaction products, such as carbonyls and free fatty acids.

Processes for treating a polyol fatty acid polyester comprise feeding an unrefined polyol fatty acid polyester containing impurities and soap, and a wash solution into a mixing vessel and dispersing the contents to form a mixture. The treated mixture is allowed to settle and separate into a first phase comprising treated polyol fatty acid polyester and a second phase comprising the wash solution, soap and impurities. A treated polyol fatty acid polyester is produced by the processes described herein. Impurities soluble in the wash solution, such as color bodies, and the like are among the impurities which can be removed by the processes of the present invention. Chelating agents can be included in the wash solution to aid in the removal of impurities such as trace metals.

A process for preparing polyol fatty acid polyesters having levels of triglyceride below 0.5 % is described. Methyl esters having a level of monoglycerides below 500 ppm, a nondetectable level of di- and triglyceride and a glycerine level of less than about 200 ppm are prepared and then used in a two-stage, solvent-free transesterification reaction to prepare the polyol fatty acid polyesters.

Process for the conversion of sodium bromide to anhydrous hydrobromic acid and sodium bisulfate, said process with the following sequential steps: reaction of sodium bromide and sulfuric acid in a solution of water to produce hydrobromic acid and sodium bisulfate wherein the conversion of sodium bromide is greater than about 99%; adsorption of iron bromide onto a solid adsorbent; separation of hydrobromic acid and water from the sodium bisulfate; separation and drying of hydrobromic acid; and solidification of the sodium bisulfate into a flaked or granular form.
