An electrically conductive, semi-transparent, imaging member layer includes a polymer having carbon black particles contained therein. The polymer is obtained by dispersing carbon black particles in polymer reactants prior to and/or during polymerization of the polymer. The carbon black particles become intimately connected with other carbon black particles through polymeric chains formed when the polymer forming reactants are reacted through free radical polymerization in the presence of carbon particles. The layer can have comparable conductivity with that of dispersed carbon particles in a polymer matrix, with between 10 and 50 times less carbon black particle loading.

A process which comprises providing a preform (1a) comprising a polymeric material formed to permit the introduction of a fluid under pressure into the preform (1a), heating the preform (1a) to a temperature at or above the glass transition temperature of the polymeric material and below the melting temperature of the polymeric material, placing the heated preform (1a) into a substantially cylindrical mold (10a) with a polished seamless inside surface, introducing a fluid under pressure into the heated preform (1a) while maintaining the preform (1a) axially centered in the mold (10a), thereby causing the preform (1a) to expand without contacting the mold surface, subsequently causing the preform (1a) to expand until it contact the mold surface, heating the expanded preform (1a) to an appropriate heat setting temperature above the stretching temperature and below the melting temperature of the polymeric material while maintaining fluid pressure, and subsequently cooling the set preform, resulting in formation of a biaxially oriented seamless belt. The thin walled, high surface quality biaxially oriented seamless belt thus formed is then either used as a substrate for an electrophotographic or ionographic imaging member or used as a paper handling belt in the document handler of an electrophotographic copier.

Disclosed is a process for preparing a multilayered cylindrical article such as a drum or a seamless belt which comprises introducing into a cylindrical mold (1) a composition comprising a liquid, uncured resin material and a filler material of a density different from that of the uncured resin material, spinning the mold about its axis at a speed sufficient to cause separation of the uncured resin material and the filler material into discrete layers, and subsequently curing the uncured resin to form a cylindrical article having at least two layers (8,10), wherein the outermost layer comprises the material of higher density. Subsequent to formation, the multilayered cylindrical article can be coated with additional layers. Further, additional layers can be added to the inside surface of the cylinder by introducing the additional layer material into the mold and spin casting to form a layer. The cylindrical articles can be employed as imaging members in ionographic, electrophotographic, and similar imaging processes.
