In the neutral operating mode of the transmission device (10), and when an operating mode distribution of the vehicle drivetrain is present for which the at least one interlocked switching element (B) is to be transitioned from an opened to a closed operating mode upon a request for producing the power flow in the transmission device (10), a differential speed in the region of the interlocked switching element (B) is determined by releasing the transmission capabilities of at least two frictional switching elements (A, C) that are to be closed for producing the power flow, wherein a drive torque of a drive machine (9) is adjusted to a level leading to the differential speed in the range of the interlocked switching element (B) within a predefined differential speed range, within which the interlocked switching element (B) at least approximately comprises a synchronous state and can be closed.
