    摘要: A system which avoids the bandwidth inefficiencies of simply providing multiple separate and independent channels for distributing data services over television compatible networks by considering the multiple channels as one unit and managing them as one unit with an upstream bandwidth management unit. This bandwidth management unit dynamically assigns active users to unused bandwidth among multiple channels. To accomplish this, the bandwidth management unit records each request for channel bandwidth that is made, each request that is being actively fulfilled, and each request that has been completed. Thus, data service providers, such as multimedia services, can efficiently use multiple 6 megahertz television network compatible channels to distribute their data to many requesters/users at high rates of speed over a relatively inexpensive existing network.

    摘要: A method and an apparatus for spinning off a channel so as to provide a viewer with a choice of viewing a first program (e.g., the TV program), a second program (e.g., a news brief), or both are disclosed. Next, a temporary channel is defined (406,412,414). The transmission of the first program is continued on the temporary channel (414,416). The transmission of the first program is discontinued on the first channel. A second program is transmitted on the first channel (418). Advantageously, the invention provides viewers with a programming choice not otherwise available.

    摘要: A message delivery system, for use with a communication network and in which a network presence is provided for an entity having attributes, delivers a message from a sender to the network presence. In some cases, information identifying the sender is omitted from the message. The delivery system can append non-repudiable sender information to the message. The sender can provide selected attributes as an address, and the delivery system replaces the selected attributes with an address of the network presence without disclosing the address to the sender. A software agent processes the delivered message in accordance with a processing preference included in the entity attributes.
