    摘要： An interactive information distribution system according to the present invention a session control manager having a defective channel detection module, a channel re-allocation module, and a replacement-signaling module. The session control manager is coupled to receive signals from the plurality of set top boxes, and coupled to control the digital video modulators and the assignment of communication channels to nodes. The defective channel detection module receives signals from the plurality of set top boxes, and based on the error rate and other factors determines if any of the communication channels used by the digital video modulators are defective. Upon determining that a particular communication channel is defective, the defective channel detection module signals the channel re-allocation module. The channel re-allocation module re-allocates the streams being transmitted over the defective communication channel so that they are transmitted over the other unaffected and non-defective communication channels. The replacement signaling module also identifies the defective digital video modulator and transmits this information to the network management system which in response follows a pre-defined procedure such as paging service personnel to replace the defective digital video modulator. A method for detecting and correcting a defective transmission channel is also part of the present invention.

    摘要： A method and apparatus for combining video frame sequences with a video display of an interactive program guide (IPG). The apparatus comprises a plurality of compositors that combine background information, video frame sequences and program guide graphics into a single video frame sequence. The sequence is then digitally encoded to form an MPEG-like bitstream. The same background information and video advertising is composited with a different program guide graphic to form another video sequence that is also encoded. A plurality of such sequences are produced with each sequence having a different program guide graphic. Each sequence is encoded and then multiplexed into a transport stream such that all the encoded sequences are transmitted to a subscriber's terminal using a single transport stream. As such, the subscriber can scroll from one program guide to the next without interruption of the background or video display as the program guide graphic is changed. Each graphic contains a set of programs (e.g., channels) listed along a left, vertical axis and each program associated with the channel is identified in a rectangular cell that extends toward the right. The horizontal axis represents time and about 2 hours of programming for ten channels is shown in the graphic.

    摘要： A method and apparatus for providing subscription-on-demand (SOD) services, dependent subscription services and contingent services for a interactive information distribution system, where a consumer may subscribe to packages of on-demand programs for a single price and view the programs in the subscribed package at any time for no additional cost. The apparatus and method are embodied in a combination of software, which provides a so-called navigator, and hardware, including a subscriber terminal that provides certain functionality for the navigator and service provider equipment that supports the functionality of the terminal. As such, graphical user interface functionality is distributed between the service provider equipment and subscriber equipment (subscriber terminal). Such distribution provides an enjoyable, real time interactive process for accessing SOD services that allows the subscriber to rapidly identify and access a subscription service. In addition, a non-subscriber of a particular service is quickly identified and provided the opportunity to, through the use of a graphical user interface, subscribe to the programming provided by the system.

    摘要： A method (200) and apparatus for masking the effects of latency within an information distribution system (100). The apparatus comprises a set top terminal (108) that requests and receives information from an information server (102). The information is generally displayed upon a conventional television (110) coupled to the set top terminal which contains a central processing unit (122) and an information stream decoder (130) programmed to implement the method. Upon execution of certain functions selected by a subscriber usually via a remote control (112), the method recalls (205) a predefined image from memory and begins to fade (206) the presently displayed image into a predefined image, e.g., a white screen. Simultaneously, the presently playing sound is also faded into the predefined sound, e.g., no sound. The decoder within the set top is reset (210). Lastly, the set top terminal fades (214) up from the predefined image to the new decoded video stream and from the predefined audio to the new audio stream.

    摘要： In a computer for executing a computer program, apparatus and a method for updating information within a computer program instruction without interrupting execution of the computer program. The apparatus contains a memory for storing the information within the instruction at an address within the memory, circuitry for periodically accessing the information for execution by the computer, and circuitry for altering, between periodic accesses to the memory by the accessing circuitry, the information stored in the memory. In this manner, computer program execution is not interrupted to alter the information within the instruction. Typically, the information is a data field value contained within a computer microcode instruction. Consequently, the data field value is updated, but other information within the instruction such as an operational code (OPcode), is not altered by the update operation. The apparatus and method disclosed herein find applicability in video servers, medical imaging, special effects and animation and location based entertainment systems among other applications.

    摘要： A system that provides secure transmission and complete access control for target devices. Such a system includes a distribution center, a video-on-demand system, a transmission network and a plurality of target devices. The video-on-demand system advantageously provides for encryption of the transmission, transmission of access keys, and access control. The target devices also include circuitry for communicating with the video server and decrypting the transmission and controlling access to video services. A method for providing conditional access to video services for a plurality of subscriber stations comprises the steps of: authorizing the plurality of subscriber stations to receive the video services; receiving a first order for a first video service from a first subscriber station; and transmitting tuning data to the first subscriber station so that the first subscriber station is able to receive the first video service. The method may also prevent the theft of the content of transmissions by performing the steps of: scrambling the first video service using a first key to generate a first scrambled video service; scrambling the first key using decryption data to generate a first scrambled key; distributing the decryption data to decrypt the first scrambled key to the plurality of subscriber stations; transmitting the first scrambled video service to the plurality of subscriber stations; and transmitting the first scrambled key to the plurality of subscriber stations.
