An input shaft with is driven by the prime mover and rotates therewith. An external spline on the input shaft mates with an input gear having an internal spline. Upon overload of the gearbox transmission, the input shaft fractures an annular groove in the input shaft. A bushing prevents travel of the portion of the input shaft which is driven by the prime mover and which continues to spin after the fracture.

Lubricating oil from the annulus is pumped into and through the second passageway and through the joint between the second and third passageway, and through the third passageway into the void in the cover. Thereafter the oil passes through the fourth passageway between the void in the cover and the circumferential recess in the cover and lubricating the bearing mounted adjacent the recess in the cover/housing.

The carrier includes first and second arcuately extending troughs (121; 125) for catching lubricating fluid (201) slung by an oil slinger (141). The first trough (121; 125) is in fluid communication with the shaft and with the upper bearing (131; 132) which pumps fluid (201) through the bearing (131; 132) and into an upper passageway which terminates in an opening which supplies fluid (201) to a second trough (121; 125) which, in turn, supplies fluid (201) to the second bearing (131; 132) which, in turn, supplies fluid (201) to the annular pool formed on the upper portion of the gear affixed to the output shaft (103). The annular pool is formed by a cylindrically shaped dike secured to the upper portion of the gear. Overflow from the pool lubricates the gear and returns oil to the reservoir.

The service brake rotors have a large surface area and are keyed to the rotatable hub enabling efficient brake cooling and efficacious brake performance in a compact arrangement.

An output sun gear driven by an input carrier drives output planetary gears which, in turn, interengage the output ring gear driving and rotating the spindle-carrier. A fixed drive end housing includes an input ring gear and houses a noise reducing radially floating input carrier and a plurality of input planet gears rotatably mounted in the input carrier. The input sun gear is driven by an electric motor and drives the plurality of input planet gears which mesh with the input ring gear causing rotation of the input carrier about its true center. The input carrier is partially nested within the spindle-carrier and the motor is partially nested within the fixed drive end housing.

An electric wheel motor cooling system includes first and second electric wheel motors (104M, 105M) and gear reducers which use hydraulic fluid for cooling and lubrication. Each of the electric wheel motor housings (104, 105) includes a sump (104S, 105S) and a scavenge pump (204, 205) for return of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic fluid reservoir (210). A remotely located hydraulic pump (201) interconnected with the hydraulic fluid reservoir supplies and powers first and second locally located hydraulic motors (202, 203) which supply the electric motors and gears with an equal flow of lubricating and cooling oil. The first and second hydraulic motors, in turn, drive a common output shaft which, in turn, drives first and second scavenge pumps. The first and second scavenge pumps have a higher fluid flow rate than the hydraulic motors ensuring that oil is removed from the first and second electric wheel motor housings thus eliminating any churning losses of the motors or gears.
