摘要:
A liquid separator configured to separate liquid from a fluid stream. The separator includes a housing, a separation chamber disposed within the housing, a drain, an inlet channel, a swirler disposed within the inlet channel, and an outlet channel. The drain has a drain passageway for draining liquid from the separation chamber. As well, the inlet channel is configured to communicate the fluid stream from a first inlet end to a second inlet end disposed within the housing and proximate the separation chamber. The outlet channel is configured to communicate the fluid stream from a first outlet end positioned proximate the second inlet end, to a second outlet end remote from the separation chamber. Preferably, the drain passageway comprises an inner diameter which is sized such that the interaction between the surface tension of the liquid and the inner passageway causes some liquid to be retained in the drain passageway, the retained liquid forming a low pressure gas seal of the drain passageway. The drain passageway is preferably substantially horizontal. The housing preferably includes a base and a cap which is removably mountable to the base.

A sub-assembly for an electrochemical stack, such as a PEM fuel cell stack, has a bipolar plate with sealing material extending from its upper face, around the edge of the bipolar plate, and onto its lower face. The bipolar plate is preferably a combination of an anode plate and a cathode plate defining an internal coolant flow field and bonded together by sealing material which also provides a seal around the coolant flow field. All of the sealing material in the sub-assembly may be one contiguous mass. To make the sub-assembly, anode and cathode plates are loaded into a mold. Liquid sealing material is injected into the mold and fills a gap between the edge of the plates, and portions of the outer faces of the plates, and the mold. In a stack, sub-assemblies are separated by MEAs which at least partially overlap the sealing material on their faces.

This specification describes a system and method for controlling the voltage produced by a fuel cell. The system involves providing a bypass line between an air exhaust from the fuel cell and an air inlet of the fuel cell. At least one controllable device is configured to allow the flow rate through the bypass line to be altered. A controller is provided to control the controllable device. The method involves varying the rate of recirculation of air exhaust to air inlet so as to provide a desired change in fuel cell voltage.

An electrolyser operates within an energy system, for example to provide grid services, energy storage or fuel, or to produce hydrogen from electricity produced from renewable resources. The electrolyser may be configured to operate at frequently or quickly varying rates of electricity consumption or to operate at a specified power consumption. In one process of operating an electrolyser, a series of dispatches is received indicating a specified power consumption for a period of time. The dispatches may occur at least once every 30 minutes. The electrolyser is operated according to the dispatches. Hydrogen produced by the electrolyser is discharged to a natural gas system.

Embodiments of the pertinent invention relates to apparatus, systems and methods for diagnostic testing of an electrochemical cell stack, such as a fuel cell stack or an electrolyzer cell stack. According to one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a multiplexer for switching current to one or more cells in the electrochemical cell stack, a voltage monitor for monitoring the voltage between the anode plate and the cathode plate of one or more cells, a power supply module for supplying power to the multiplexer and a gas supply module for supplying fuel gas and non-fuel gas to the electrochemical cell stack. The apparatus further comprises a control module electrically connected to and configured to control the multiplexer, the voltage monitor, the power supply module and the gas supply module to conduct automatic diagnostic testing of the electrochemical cell stack. The control module is further configured to determine, through the diagnostic testing, whether the electrochemical cell stack has one or more gas leaks. If one or more gas leaks is detected, the control module determines which of the one or more cells is affected by the gas leak. The control module is further configured to determine a degree of crossover of electrochemical reactant through the membrane of each cell and whether any of these cells is likely to be shortcircuited.

Some embodiments of the present invention provide electrolyzer cells in which distribution of water over the surface of an electrolyte layer (e.g. a MEA) is improved. Specifically, some embodiments provide an electrolyzer cell, including a flow field plate arranged in combination with at least two porous metal layers having smooth and flat surfaces, in which water is more uniformly distributed across an active surface of an electrolyte layer, which in turn may lead to a more uniform reaction rate over the active area of the electrolyte layer. Other related embodiments also include simplifications that may reduce costs related to manufacturing and assembly of electrochemical cells.

Some embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for more accurately determining the cause of a particular fault in an electrochemical cell based on an impedance measurement characterizing the electrochemical cell. In some very specific embodiments the impedance of an electrochemical cell or stack is measured across a range of frequencies to determine a corresponding impedance signature characterizing the present state of the electrochemical cell or stack. By evaluating the impedance signature in comparison to reference information, a number of faults may be detected. In some more specific embodiments once a corresponding specific fault is determined and an indication is provided to a user and/or a balance-of-plant monitoring system, which may be used to adjust the operating parameters of an electrochemical cell module to compensate for and/or reverse the detrimental effects caused by a particular fault.
