The fittings may be on opposite ends, with top and bottom fittings of different configurations, thereby ensuring proper installation of the assembly. The particular medium to be separated is not particularly limited, and can include slurries, fluids including water, and pre-loaded chromatography columns.

A process for removing oxygen from a copper plating solution is provided. The solution is passed through a degasser comprising a shell and hollow hydrophobic fiber porous membranes wherein the shell while a vacuum is drawn on the surfaces of the fibers opposite the fiber surfaces contacted by the solution. Gas passed through the fiber walls while liquid is prevented from infiltrating the fiber pores. The composition of the solution is monitored so that the composition can be retained substantially constant by adding components of the solution as needed.

A method is described for rapid and economical activation and/or preconditioning of gas purification substrates by providing forced convection of the preconditioning or activating gas through the pores of the substrate. The gas is pumped into the substrate-containing vessel and raised to an elevated pressure, which is maintained for a short predetermined time, followed by venting of contents of the vessel. The vessel is again pressurized with the purging gas to an elevated level, and the elevated pressure is maintained for a short predetermined time, followed by venting of the vessel. This cycle is repeated as often as needed or desired. Activation and/or preconditioning can be accomplished in a much shorter time and with much less gas usage compared to diffusion preconditioning and activation processes. The separation is accomplished by passing a source solution containing the ions to be separated through a cartridge containing the membrane-ligand composition, causing the selected ions to be complexed to the HOPO ligands and subsequently removing the selected ions from the cartridge by passing an aqueous receiving solution through the cartridge and quantitatively stripping the selected ions from the HOPO ligand.

Compositions and methods for selectively binding specific metal ions, such as Ca and C , contained in a source solution are disclosed and described. This is accomplished by the use of a composition comprised of an EGTA ligand covalently bonded to a membrane support. The composition formula of the present invention is M-B-L where M is a membrane having a hydrophilic, partially hydrophilic or a composite membrane with a hydrophilic surface, B is a covalent linkage, and L is an EGTA ligand. The separation is accomplished by passing a source solution containing the ions to be separated through a device containing the membrane-ligand composition, causing the selected ions to be complexed to the EGTA ligands and subsequently removing the selected ions from the device by passing an aqueous receiving solution through the device and quantitatively stripping the selected ions from the EGTA ligand.
