The filter cartridge assembly incorporates a key system to ensure compatibility of a replacement filter unit for a given cartridge assembly. Each key may have a different angular position, angular dimension and radial projection. A plurality of plungers situated radially in a pump body, are sequentially actuated inwardly by a rotatably driven, eccentrically mounted actuating ring. A central valve housing is coaxially received within the body and includes a fuel inlet chamber and a fuel discharge chamber, which are closely axially aligned. The pump body closely engages the valve housing such that radially extending bores in the body and a portion of the valve housing between the inlet and discharge chambers, together define the pumping chambers. All pumping chambers are connected via short passages in the valve housing, to the common inlet chamber and the common outlet chamber. This configuration, by which all fuel passages and associated valves subject to the pumping pressure are within the central valve housing, not only minimizes the dead volume, but keeps all fuel flows confined within a radius that is smaller than the actuator ring sliding radius, i.e., where the actuating ring contacts the outer ends of the plungers or cam shoes at the outer endof the plungers. As a result, engine or other high viscosity (i.e., 'lube oil') can be used to lubricate the sliding surfaces.

A pump and associated method including the steps of pre-metering successive quantities of fuel from a reservoir to a positive displacement transfer pump, then actuating the transfer pump to raise the pressure of the successive quantities of fuel by at least about 100 psi, preferably 200-300 psi. Each quantity of fuel which was pressurized in the transfer pump, is delivered to a high pressure pumping chamber so that each pumping bore receives a certain, i.e., predetermined, charge of fuel within a first time interval. A plurality of plungers in the respective pumping bores are then simultaneously actuated to increase the pressure in the pumping chamber to the desired high pressure, preferably at least about 15,000 psi, within a second time interval, and to discharge the quantity of fuel through a high pressure discharge valve. The second time interval is of longer duration than the first time interval. As a result, the necessary quantity of fuel can be delivered to the pumping chamber in a relatively short time period. Therefore, each pumping plunger can be actuated by a dual rate cam profile over a relatively long time period such that at steady state the actuating occurs only along a relatively shallow slope of the cam profile, whereas when acceleration is required, the actuation can occur more quickly, along a steeper profile, before continuing along the relatively shallow profile.

Such fluid communication permits controlled variation of the volume of the control chamber (50) which, in turn, varies the position of the needle valve (54) to selectively permit or prevent fluid communication between the high-pressure fuel supply (48) and the engine cylinder. The valve means for selectively permitting fluid communication is preferably force balanced by relatively low forces acting thereon.

An improved fuel filter cartridge (12) comprises a housing (21) which defines an opening, a filter element (30) enclosed within the housing (21), and a flow-rever-sing insert (40) disposed within the housing (21) between the opening and the filter element (30). The improved filter cartridge (21) is preferably used with a conventional header (10) of the type having a fuel entry port (16), a fuel exit port (14), a central first conduit (22) for interiorly defining a first axial fuel passage which is in fluid communication with the entry port (16) of the header. Headers used with the improved filter cartridge also include a second conduit (24) surrounding and cooperating with the first conduit (22) to define a second axial fuel passage therebetween, the second fuel passage being in fluid communication with the exit port (14) of the header, and a base (20) for mounting the filter cartridge (12) thereto. When the filter cartridge (12) is mounted to the base (20) of the header, the insert (40), filter element (30) and housing (21) cooperate to define a first chamber (34) in communication with the first conduit (22) of the header and to define a second chamber (32) in communication with the second conduit (24) of the header. Fuel delivered to the exit port (14) of the header progressively flows through the second conduit (24), is guided radially outwardly by the insert (40), flows through the filter element (30), flows through the first conduit (22) and, finally, flows into the entry port (16) of the header. Methods of using the improved filter cartridge (12) are also disclosed.
