The anchor element (20) has a first configuration disposed about an anchor axis and configured to pierce a body tissue wall. In a second configuration, the anchor elements (20) may have an enlarged shape, and in response to a temperature rise in the anchor element (20), the pierced body tissue wall is drawn closer to the device body. The anchor element (20) maintains alignment substantially with the anchor axis to inhibit tearing of the pierced body tissue wall by the anchor element (20). The system may include balloons for targeting the radial pressure of the anchor elements into the body vessel wall. The anchor elements may be made of shape memory materials capable of localized heating due to an induction device.

When pressure is increased in the multi-stage balloon from the first inflation state to the second inflation state, the waist locations expand either by breaking or stretching the waist restraints or by overcoming expansion resistance incorporated into the balloon material at the waist locations. The multi-stage balloon catheter may be used to implant a stent (90) in a manner to conform and match a curved passageway rather than tending to straighten the passageway.
