A disposable cartridge (10) comprising a dialyser or adapted to receive a dialyser and use of said cartridge in a hemodialysis machine (1), wherein the cartridge has a blood flowpath for carrying a volume of blood to be treated in the dialyser and a dialysate flowpath, isolated from the blood flowpath, for delivering a flow of dialysate solution through the dialyser. The cartridge (10) is received in an engine section (4) of the machine (1). The engine section (4) has first and second platens (5, 6) which close when the cartridge (10) is inserted to retain the cartridge (10). Actuators (7) and sensors (8) arranged on the second platen (6) control operating of the cartridge (10).

A cardioplegic agent delivery system comprises a supply reservoir (40) for a cardioplegic agent carrier fluid, a delivery channel from the supply reservoir (40) to an outlet (48), and a pump (50) to flow the carrier liquid in the delivery channel above a minimum driving pressure. The supply reservoir (40) is configured to hold carrier fluid below the minimum driving pressure. The pump (50) is a centrifugal pump configured to receive carrier fluid from the supply reservoir (40) and to flow the carrier fluid to the outlet (48) at a flow rate and above the minimum driving pressure for the delivery of cardioplegic agent. This allows cardioplegia delivery to be managed better.

A fluid infusion device is provided with a cannula spring which functions as an introducer needle, a retraction return spring, and a fluid path. A hollow cannula tubing is wound, bent and sharpened into a shape which allows it to operate as an introducer needle, retraction spring and fluid path in an infusion device. A button is used to insert the introducer needle portion of the cannula spring and a soft catheter, and once the introducer needle portion and catheter have been fully inserted, an engagement between the button and post of the base of the infusion device releases the cannula spring such that the introducer needle portion of the cannula spring automatically retracts, leaving the catheter in the body. An end of the introducer needle portion of the cannula spring remains in fluid communication with the catheter in the body to provide an uninterrupted fluid path.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for venting a gas from a liquid, which are applicable to a wide variety of medical liquid delivery systems. The apparatus includes level detectors, a clamp, and a control apparatus operably connected to the level detectors and the clamp. The method includes detecting whether liquid or gas is present at the level detectors, and opening and closing a clamp to vent gas. The present invention also relates to an apparatus and method for controlling pressure differential across a semipermeable membrane by using a pressure sensor, a gas source, a valve, and a membrane.

Various arrangements for determining an atomization element of a nebulizer is dry are presented. The vibratable element of the nebulizer may be energized with an electrical signal that sweeps from a first frequency to a second frequency. While energizing the vibratable element of the nebulizer with the electrical signal that sweeps from the first frequency to the second frequency, a sequence of impedance values of the vibratable element of the nebulizer may be measured. The sequence of impedance values of the vibratable element of the nebulizer may be analyzed to determine if the atomization element of the nebulizer is wet or dry.
