The inventive electrodialysis eluent generator for ion chromatography comprises an ion source container, an eluent generating chamber which is provided with input and output ports, an ion-exchange membrane which is arranged between the ion source container and the eluent generating chamber, an aqueous solution source connected to the input port of the eluent generating chamber, a first electrode arranged in the ion source container and a second electrode which is arranged in the eluent generating chamber and embodied in the form of an ion-exchange membrane provided with an electroconductive layer applied to the surface thereof. Said membrane is used as the external wall of the eluent generating chamber, said electroconductive layer being applied to the external, with respect to the eluent generating chamber, side of the ion-exchange membrane. Said generator also comprises a current power supply. The invention makes it possible to eliminate a gas disturbance effect in the element.

A permeative amine/acid introduction device (PAID) is placed after a conventional KOH eluent suppressed conductometric anion chromatography (SCAC) system. The PAID converts the suppressed eluites from the acid form to the corresponding salt. For example, when the analytes are acids, they are converted to the corresponding ammonium salt (NR 2 H + Hex → NR 2 H 2 + + X - ) and allows very weak acids HX (pK a ≥ 7.0) that cannot normally be detected by SCAC to be measured by a second conductivity detector following the PAID. Permeative reagent introduction is dilutionless, can be operated without pumps and provides good mixing with low band dispersion (as small as 30 µL). An exemplary amine is diethylamine (DEA), which was chosen as the amine source due to its low pK b value (pK b 3.0), high vapor pressure, and low toxicity and low odor.

The present invention pertains to a method of ion chromatography wherein a specialized electrodeionization (EDI) apparatus is used for simultaneous ion suppression of cations from a flowing base containing an anion sample of interest and ion suppression of anions from a flowing acid containing a cation sample of interest. The methods described herein allow for the ion suppression of samples containing chloride, nitrate, and other electrochemically active anions, as well as sodium, potassium, and other electrochemically active cations, without causing damage to the suppressor.

The constituents of a liquid stream are analyzed by flowing the stream through a hollow tube or fiber (30) with spaced protuberances (34,35) of a character to disrupt laminar flow and to produce turbulence. In one embodiment, the tubing (30) includes ion exchange sites and is preferentially permeable to one of the ions of an electrolyte. In this manner, the tubing (30) is useful as an electrolyte suppressor in ion chromatography in which the analyte ions are separated by chromatography using the electrolyte and the electrolyte is converted to weakly ionized form by passage through the tubing (30) prior to conductivity detection.
