    摘要: The screens (114) of a pulp treating vessel (110), such as a paper pulp thickener, or diffuser, are back flushed in a simple yet effective manner. The screens are mounted to a supporting conduit (116) within a vertical vessel, and a cylinder (42) is connected at one open end (43) to the conduit, and the other open end (44) is disposed within the pulp inside the vessel. A piston (46) is mounted within the cylinder and relative movement between the piston and cylinder is effected periodically in order to force liquid from within the cylinder into the conduit and out the screens, backflushing the screens and preventing clogging. Since no additional volume of liquid is added to the vessel during backflushing, no surge occurs in the vessel. Conventional accumulators, on/off valves, and the like can be eliminated while -- in the case of diffusion washing -- efficiency can be increased as much as 20-30%, and capacity increased as much as about 15%.

    摘要: A pressure diffuser (10) includes in a liquid-tight pressurized vessel (12) a vertical screen (24) which defines with a vessel wall (14) first and second interior volumes (26, 29) for transmitting pulp from a pulp inlet to a pulp outlet and receiving displacement (e.g. wash or bleach) liquid transmitted from headers (28) through the pulp. The screen ends around housing members (20, 22) have different cross-sectional areas, and quick movement of the screen effects backflushing. The volumes (26, 29) are segregated by the vertical, generally cylindrical, screen (24). A chamber (42) is provided in communication on opposite sides of a piston (44) therein with the pulp adjacent the pulp inlet (16), and the extracted liquid (in 29). By displacing the piston with a cylinder (50) immediately prior to rapidly moving the screen vertically with a hydraulic cylinder (50) to effect backflushing through the screen, the pulp pressure on the screen is reduced and at the same time shocks and compaction of the pulp adjacent the inlet caused by the movement of the screen are avoided.

    摘要: A separation system (10) comprising a chamber (13) for receiving feed material comprising fluid containing solid particles of various sizes. The chamber (13) is bounded by a flexible medium (35) which provides a selective barrier through which selected undersize solid particles can pass but not particles larger than the undersize solid particles. A vibrator (61) is provided for vibrating the flexible medium (35) to facilitate passage of fluid and solid particles through the flexible medium, wherein the vibration causes the flexible medium to oscillate towards and away from fluid within the chamber (13). The vibration typically induces fracturing of agglomerated matter comprising the solid particles within the fluid, leading to fragmentation of the agglomerated matter into the oversize solids and the undersize solids. The vibration also has the effect of introducing a frequency of vibration or a shock wave into the liquid surface at the interface with the flexible medium (35) and across the flexible medium (35).

The invention also provides an inlet screen, comprising an upright hollow column (1), having an opening at the top across which a sack filter (6) is positioned, the sack filter extending downwardly into the column, and an air diffuser (8) at the lower end of the column, and an outlet (5, 23, 34) from the column, whereby in use liquid waste flows into the top of the column, through the sack filter to the outlet, the sack filter and liquid waste being agitated by discharge of air from the air diffuser.
