Each filtering unit ( 14 ) comprises a rotatable, perforated drum ( 16 ) with a particle-catching filter means ( 18 ) on the outer surface of the drum. A first predetermined degree of coating with particles is created on the filter means of the drums, and purified liquid inside all the drums of the filtering units ( 14 ) except at least one, which is kept inactive in a standby state by shutting off the associated pump ( 26 ), is then fed to a consumer. The feed of purified liquid from a drum to the consumer is interrupted when a second predetermined, higher degree of coating with particles has been reached on the filter means on an individual drum, at least one filtering unit kept in standby state being activated as replacement for the filtering unit(s) from which the feed of purified liquid has been interrupted. The filter means of each filtering unit shut down is cleaned, and liquid in the tank is made to pass through the cleaned filter means and to circulate back to the tank until the first predetermined degree of coating with particles has been reached on the filter means of the drum. The cleaned shut-down filtering unit is put in a standby state by shutting off its pump. The second, higher degree of coating is detected by means of a respective pressure sensor coordinated with each filtrate outlet pipe ( 24 ).

The present invention can be used in clarification plants and mainly on boats for separating the waste water originating from solid-containing residual water. To this end, a separation device (5) comprises a hollow shaft (10) to which a rotating endless screw (12) is connected on the end side in the direction of the lower collecting chamber (4), wherein said endless screw is designed so as to correspond on the inner side to the hollow shaft (10). The endless screw is guided by the edge of the screw in a support bearing (7) of the intermediate wall (2). The hollow shaft (10) is mounted so as to be capable of rotation while the fine-sieving cylinder (8) is fixedly mounted, or vice-versa. A separator includes a continuous inclined screening belt that passes over an upper roller and a lower roller to screen debris from municipal wastewater. The debris is then conveyed to a debris discharge outlet. A puddle of debris-laden wastewater forms a hydrostatic pressure head on the upper surface of the screening belt to assist in forcing the wastewater through the screening belt. Wastewater that passes through apertures in the screening belt is deflected by a deflector plate that shields the return path of the screening belt. The screened wastewater is then directed to the wastewater outlet. In a preferred embodiment, a belt-cleaning brush is disposed along the return path and brushes clinging debris from the screening belt toward the debris discharge outlet. Additionally, the screening belt rides on and is supported by a perforated backing plate as it travels from the lower roller to the upper roller. Overflow ports are provided to allow wastewater from the puddle to bypass the screening belt if the screening belt becomes blinded. This prevents the wastewater from exiting the separator via the debris discharge port.
