A lapping control system for a row of thin film magnetic transducers (12) formed on a substrate (10). Each of the rows comprise a plurality of thin film magnetic transducers and at least two test structures (14, 16). Each test structure has at least two elements which comprises some combination of switch elements (34) or test thin film magnetic transducers (50). As the row of transducers is lapped, each time one of the switch elements is opened, the saturation current (ISAT) of one or more of the thin film magnetic transducers is measured and recorded so that a correlation between ISAT and throat height of the transducers is established during lapping. This correlation is used to establish the point at which lapping should be terminated.

The interface circuit (150) is assembled with the carrier plate (126) with contacts (152) on the interface circuit (150) aligned with terminal pads (138) on the slider bar (100) supported by the carrier plate (126). Alignment of the terminal pads on the slider bar (100) and contacts (152) on the interface circuit (150) are measured by digital cameras for assembly of the interfaced carrier assembly.

An automated system for lapping thin film magnetic heads comprises a lapping fixture (52) positioned in apposition to a rotary lapping plate (54). A ceramic bar (12), on which the magnetic heads (20) are deposited and from which air bearing head sliders are fabricated, is attached to an adjustable transfer tool (10) that is secured to a bow yoke holder (24). The holder (24) is fixed securely on the lapping fixture (52) so that the air bearing surface of the magnetic heads face the surface of the lapping plate (54). During the lapping process, digital data signals are obtained representative of throat height levels of selected heads (20) spaced along the bar (12). The signals are calibrated and processed by a computer (78) which provides command signals for varying lapping pressure, changing direction of row bow, shifting a weight to achieve proportional lapping along the bar, changing the lapping process to a fine polishing step and forming tapers on the rails of the head sliders.
