There is described a grinding wheel (1), particularly for grinding operations carried out on sheets of glass (2), ceramic material or similar materials, comprising a disc-shaped support with abrasive material arranged on the circumferential profile of the support, and an opposing central hole (3) for attachment to a drive shaft (4) of the grinding wheel. The disc-shaped support comprises a pair of opposed disc-shaped grinding wheel bodies (5, 6) coupled in a facing position so as to define together the abrasive grinding surface (5c, 6c) along the circumferential profile, and each of the disc-shaped bodies (5, 6) has a predetermined resilience such that the disc-shaped bodies (5, 6) can be flexed away from each other in the zone of contact with the component being ground, for the purpose of consequently applying pressure to the component in the grinding operation.

The layers (26) of abrasive particles can be tilted with respect to an axis of rotation (23) of the grinding wheel or they can be arranged such that grooving in the grinding wheel and a workpiece ground by the grinding wheel can be reduced. Alternatively, the abrasive region can be formed from a plurality of abrasive segments each having layers of abrasive particles. The layers of abrasive particles can be staggered in the direction of the axis of rotation from one segment to another. This can also reduce grooving in the grinding wheel and workpieces.

With its first grinding cover (13), the conical grinding region (3) is primarily intended for grinding larger cutting volumes, whereas the cylindrical grinding region (4), with its second grinding cover (14) is primarily intended for achieving the highest surface quality, without, in the case of the latter, having to remove large cutting volumes. The grinding covers (13, 14) differ at least in respect of the grinding agent used, CBN preferably being used in the conical region and diamond being used in the cylindrical region. Further disclosed is a method, which works with the grinding tool (1) as per the invention and which grinds the shaft-like workpieces (16). Oversize and surface quality are at least temporarily simultaneously ground.

The polishing tool (10) comprises a rotation shaft (1) arranged parallel to a feed direction (S) of the polishing tool relative to a workpiece (W) and at least two polishing bodies (7,8). The first polishing body (8) includes a foamed resin such as a foamed polyurethane resin, and has an outer peripheral surface (8a) having a porosity higher than the porosity of the second polishing body (7). The second polishing body (7) comprises a non-foamed resin such as a non-foamed polyurethane resin being a material more rigid than the material used for the first polishing body (8). During polishing, the first polishing body (8) removes material from the surface (Wa) of the workpiece (W), and the second polishing body (7) smoothes an unevenness resulting from the material removal with the first polishing body (8).
