A wood member is placed on a support table and a plurality of cutters mounted on and spaced along a shaft extending in parallel to the end of the wood member on the table is moved relative to the table in a direction inclined with respect to the wood member thereby to make a first cutting to form a plurality of bevel cuts. The support table is shifted in the direction parallel to the end of the wood member and a second cutting is made by the relative movement between the cutters and the table. During the first and second cutting, the wood member is pressed against the support table by a pressing member at a position adjacent to the end of the wood member and between any two adjacent cutters.

A method of aligning veneers during the manufacture of a wood panel, where an aligning table is provided in front of a press (20), where the veneers are stacked prior to being fed into the press. According to the present invention, it is taught how to ensure that the veneers are perpendicular to the conveying direction and how incipient angle errors are detected and corrected by means of a differential control of the press feed. According to the present invention, this is achieve by establishing a gap between two consecutive veneers at said intervals, whereupon the trailing edge of the leading one of said two veneers is detected by means of two photocells (11) arranged along a line perpendicular to the conveying direction and with a certain distance in the longitudinal direction of the veneers. A possible time difference between the signals emitted by the photocells (11) for detecting the trailing edge can then be used to change the conveying speed of the veneers on one side compared to the other side, until the time difference is eliminated.

A method and an apparatus of wood pressing usable in manufacturing glued laminated wood such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL) using a number of wood veneer sheets are disclosed. A hot press (141) used for wood pressing includes a pair of heating plates (143,155) which are disposed one above the other and have pressing surfaces facing each other. The paired heating plates are both movable toward and away from each other. In operation, firstly one of the heating plates is moved toward the other heating plate to a position where the pressing surface of the one heating plate is spaced from a surface to which a veneer sheet is to be glued by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the veneer sheet. Then, the other heating plate is moved toward the one heating plate until a desired pressure is produced pressing.
