The invention relates to a machine for assembling a cardboard box including an initial device for placing the laminar bodies on horizontal guides, the sides of which include a front device that acts on each laminar body, raising the structure thereof in order to begin assembling the box, and a rear device that assembles the bottom of the box, first folding the inner flaps and then the outer flaps on top of the former, joining said flaps by means of an adhesive. The invention is characterized in that the rear device includes a scissor mechanism (6) defined from a linearly moveable head (19), to which two mobile arms (20) are separately linked, the oscillating movements of which are guided by means of inner rails (23) linked to arched grooves (21),the front ends of said mobile arms (20) including roller guides (25) that contact the inner flaps (5) during the folding down of same in one of the assembly stages of the bottom of the box (3).

The working carousel (10) is fit for rotating the plurality of the pliers assemblies (20) transferring the containers (2) to the removal station (17) through the plurality of heating stations (15) which plastically mould the melted bottom portion (4), compressing this latter according to a direction almost transversal to the longitudinal axis of the container (2). The plurality of heating stations (15) have an oscillatory motion having direction approximately radial with respect to the working carousel (10), in such a way to led the melting means assemblies (60) contacting the bottom portion (4), in correspondence of an heating condition (E) of said melting means assemblies (60).

An apparatus for opening and closing packaging blanks (pockets) disposed in a web in sequence after one another. The apparatus has mechanical retainer means (33a, b) which are disposed, on the displacement of a flexible web (20) along said mechanical retainer means, to guide retainer means (13a, b; 43a, b; 53a, b) disposed at said web. The same includes at least one part where the mechanical retainer means (33a, b) are disposed in spaced apart relationship from one another in order to keep the packaging blanks open. Moreover, the apparatus includes mechanical guide means (35, 36) which guide the opposing edge portions (24a, b) of the web (20) on their displacement to and from that part of the apparatus where the packaging blanks are moved open. The guide means (35) are disposed in order, in said part, to position the edge portions (24a, b) of the web (20) in relation to one another so that the packaging blanks are opened and closed, respectively. The mechanical guide means (35, 36) are flexible either in a first plane with the aid of the mechanical retainer means (33a, b) or in a plane which is parallel to the first plane, the guide means (35, 36) being substantially inflexible in a plane which is at right angles to said first plane.

A method of and apparatus for the automated manufacture of a liner for a cargo container has a work area (35) over which tubular plastics material (15) may be drawn out, for forming the liner. A shuttle (39) is disposed between the layers (18, 19) of the material and is maintained stationary as the material is drawn out, until a portion of the liner (15) to carry an attachment is disposed over the shuttle (39). The shuttle provides a counter-force for the bonding of the attachment (23) (such as an access pipe) to the liner and also serves to hold apart the upper layer (18) of the material from the or each other layer during the bonding operation. The shuttle may have rollers (41) which run on an internal surface of the liner material and may be maintained stationary with respect to the work area by magnets (52, 53) on the work area (35) and the shuttle (39) respectively. Following the drawing of a sufficient length of material whilst holding the shuttle stationary, the drawn length may be welded across (Figure 9) to form an end panel for the liner and severed from the remaining material, with the shuttle (39) disposed in that remaining material.

A machine for feeding a collapsed beverage can carrier sleeve (12) to a flight bar conveyor (50) and introducing the sleeve in fully open condition to the pocket of the conveyor. After leaving the feed rools (36, 38) the collapsed carrier sleeve is moved through a fixed guide (48) by lugs (45) on a movable chain (46). The end flaps (18) on the upwardly facing side panel are held in place on the guide while the end flaps (20) on the downwardly facing side panel are moved downwardly by a fixed cam surface (106). The substantially opened sleeve is then either given a final kick by rotating arms (114) or is propelled by the feed lugs to accelerate it into the pocket while at the same time fully straightening and opening the sleeve. The carton dimension corresponding to the length of the pocket is the same as the length of the pocket, resulting in more pockets per conveyor length and permitting operation at slower conveyor speeds.

Each set of flight lugs comprises leading flight lugs and trailing flight lugs and the leading flight lugs have recesses that face and oppose recesses on the trailing flight lugs. The recesses are formed to confine an open carton therebetween. Notches are formed in the flight lugs in such a way that movement of the leading and trailing flight lugs toward one another causes an un-erected carton between the lugs to be captured and erected.
