The object of the invention is a method and an apparatus in an electric propulsion arrangement of a sailing vessel, wherein the sailing vessel has a traction device provided with an electric motor and with a propeller mechanism, the electric motor of traction device is arranged to be used, if necessary, in forward drive and reverse drive as well as during sailing as a generator for charging the accumulators of the sailing vessel. The propeller mechanism comprises a propeller hub with blades, a hollow propeller shaft fixed at its first end to the propeller hub, a shaft controlling the pitch angles of the propeller blades, said control shaft rotating inside the propeller shaft, and a servomotor rotating the control shaft. The servomotor is fixed to the second end of the propeller shaft to be rotatable along with the propeller shaft.

To make each propeller blade (5) turn, a hollow shaft (17) is provided that surrounds the driving shaft (2), as well as conical toothed wheels (14, 15) mounted on the hollow shaft and on the driving shaft, the teeth (12) of which engage the corresponding step bearing (7). To limit radial forces, the outer surface of each step bearing (7) is kept free. The step bearing (7) is radially held by a collar (9) of the threaded bolt (6).

A motor for driving a propeller is disclosed which has a drive shaft (10) which is coupleable to a propeller shaft (20) by bevel gears (12 and 14) so as to rotate the shaft (20) to in turn rotate propeller blades P of an outboard motor. A phase adjustment mechanism (40) is provided for rotating the shaft (30) relative to the shaft (20) to in turn rotate the propeller blades P around the pitch axis to change the pitch of the propeller blades P. The phase adjustment mechanism comprises ring gears (48 and 50), together with planet gears (48) in engagement with a gear on the shaft (30) and planet gears (46) in engagement with a gear (26) on the shaft (20). An anti-backlash mechanism for preventing movement with propeller blades P about the pitch axis due to backlash within the gears of the phase adjuster mechanism (40), includes a screw-threaded section (252) coupled with the shaft (30) and the yoke (270) on the section (252) for movement on the section (252) in the longitudinal direction of the shaft (30). Engagement between the screw-threaded section (252) and the yoke (270) forms a rigid coupling of the shaft (30) to the propeller blades P so that any backlash in the phase adjusting mechanism (40) is not transmitted through the coupling to the propeller blades P.

A blade setting adjusting means (4, 5) is adapted for rotating all blades (5) in unison. According to the invention, the blade setting adjusting means comprises a blade setting adjuster ring (4) which includes locking means (20, 21) for co-action with locking means (22, 23) on the hub. The adjuster ring (4) can be moved axially between a locking position in which the adjuster ring is locked against rotation, and a release position in which the adjuster ring can be rotated relative to the hub (1, 2). The locking means (20, 21, 22, 23) define a plurality of distinct rotational positions of the adjuster ring (4). Movement transmission means (15, 17) transfer rotary movement of the adjuster ring (4) to respective blades (5).
