The suspension rope has a first suspension end coupled to the elevator car and a second suspension end coupled to the counterweight. The first compensation rope has a first compensation end coupled to the elevator car and a second compensation end coupled to the counterweight. The first optical sensor assembly can have a first optical sensor pair including a first emitter and a first receiver. The first emitter is configured to emit a first beam to be received by the first receiver. The first optical sensor pair is configured to detect interruption of the first beam by the first compensation rope. The controller controls movement of the elevator car based on the detected interruption.

A hoisting machine unit for installing an elevator is provided with an attachment frame, a hoisting machine having a driving sheave and provided on the attachment frame, a leader strip which is looped around the driving sheave and pulls and moves a main rope for suspending a car, for looping the main rope around the driving sheave, and a holding device for holding both ends of the leader strip with respect to the attachment frame. Accordingly, it is possible to maintain a state in which the leader strip is looped around the driving sheave. As a result, it is possible to prevent the leader strip from coming off from the driving sheave in conveying the hoisting machine unit for installing the elevator.

The invention relates to a car for a lift in a lift shaft, which is suspended as far as possible in the centre of gravity thereof at least in a ratio of 2:1 by means of carrying means guided via pulleys. Same is guided via car guides, wherein the car comprises a car base, a car roof, car walls and a passenger space therebetween that can be accessed by the passenger. The object of the invention is to form a car for a preferably machine room-free lift in such a way that as large a portion as possible of the available shaft cross-section can be made available to the passenger, and a reduction in the required shaft pit depth is achieved and/or minimal shaft headroom is required. The width of the car should be as large as possible in comparison to known solutions in the same shaft width. According to the invention, at least one first part of a pulley (6) is located in a region between the car base (1) and car roof (4), and a second part of the pulley (6) is located in the car base (1) or at the same height as the car base (1) or in the car roof (4) or at the same height as the car roof (4).

The first and the second roping portions (A,B) are successive portions of a roping (3) passing unbroken via a locking arrangement (4) provided at the second elevator unit (2) the locking arrangement (4) locking the roping to the second elevator unit (2) between the first and the second portions (A,B). The invention also relates to a method in constructing an elevator where the locking arrangement (4) is unlocked and thereafter the roping (3) is repositioned with respect to the locking arrangement (4) and thereafter the locking arrangement (4) is relocked.
