Cooling systems and the methods of cooling filaments using the cooling systems are disclosed. One embodiment of the cooling system includes a layer of nozzles (130) that spray air on the filaments (30) above a pre-pad water spray. Alternatively, another cooling system utilizes air-atomizing nozzles to spray a mixture of air and water on the filaments. The cooling systems provide an improved distribution of cooling fluid particulars to enhance the cooling of the filaments. The sprays from the nozzles have a higher momentum and are able to penetrate deeper into a filament fan than conventional cooling systems. The results are an improved temperature uniformity among the filaments and an overall reduction in temperature of the filaments prior to the application of size material.

A method and apparatus (10) for forming continuous glass fibers. The method includes the steps of supplying a plurality of streams of molten glass (16) from a bushing (14), drawing the streams (16) into continuous glass filaments (20), providing a stream of coolant air (12) parallel to the direction of draw of the streams of continuous glass filaments (20) at the front and back of the bushing (14) to entrain the coolant air (12) wherein the entrainment of the coolant air (12) is determined by the speed at which the glass filaments (20) are drawn; and then collecting the continuous filaments (20). The apparatus for delivering non-intrusive coolant air (12) to an attenuation zone of a glass drawing process of a bushing (14) including a bushing tip plate (14) having a plurality of bushing tips (18) includes at least two plenum chambers (26) having inlets (28) into which coolant air (12) is fed under pressure at a selected flow rate to discharge outlets (30), the discharge outlets (30) extend a longitudinal length of the bushing tip plate (14) to provide coolant air (12) to a front and back of the tip plate (14); wherein the entrainment of the coolant air (12) is a function of the speed at which the glass filaments (20) are drawn.

A device suitable to be used as a spinneret for spinning melted glass, in a direction opposite to that of the force of gravity, consisting of a body (1) of a stiff material, extending parallelly to the surface of the glass bath and in contact with the same and containing a plurality of openings (or nozzles (3)) which do not communicate with one another and extend through the entire thickness (2) of said body, thereby each one of these openings delimits an area of the bath, from which the melted glass is drawn out as a filament by extrusion. A process for spinning melted glass which comprises bringing into contact with the surface of the glass bath, in a position parallel to said surface, a body of a stiff material, provided with a plurality of openings (or nozzles) which do not communicate with one another and extend through the entire thickness of said body, and in drawing out from said bath, through each opening, a filament of melted glass by drawing from bottom upwards.

Fiberizing bushing assemblies (26), usually of rectangular shape, for fiberizing molten inorganic material like glass require cooling members located in the proximity of the orifices or tips forming the fibers. Cooling tubes (16) carrying a cooling fluid like water are used by some fiber manufacturers and the cooling tubes have always been oriented with the length dimension of the bushing. It has now been discovered that orienting the cooling tubes (54) to be substantially parallel to the width dimension, though more costly to fabricate because of the greater number required per bushing assembly, significantly reduce fiber break out rate and significantly increase productivity because they are easier to keep properly adjusted and result in a more uniform temperature of the fiberizing tips (12,52).
