The present invention relates to a process for the production of xylose and dissolving pulp from xylan-containing biomass, such as hardwood. The invention is based on prehydrolysis of the xylan-containing biomass with SO 2 in specified conditions, followed by chromatographic fractionation, nanofiltration or precipitation crystallization of the xylose-containing prehydrolyzate to obtain a xylose product having a xylose content of at least 55% on DS. The dissolving pulp obtained from the process can be used for example for the production of viscose.

A process for the continuous production of confectionery products comprising crystallised xylitol comprising: feeding xylitol in liquid form which is capable of crystallisation on cooling into a mixer together with xylitol seed crystals; mixing the xylitol in liquid form and the xylitol seed crystals to produce a seeded mass; and discharging the seeded mass from the mixer, wherein the mixer is maintained at a temperature of between 80 °C and 120 °C, whereby build up of crystallised xylitol within the mixer is substantially prevented. The xylitol in liquid form may be molten xylitol or a solution of xylitol and may comprise xylitol alone or in high proportion in combination with other polyols.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a process for producing a solid material from a saccharide liquid and to provide a solid material of the saccharide solution. The present invention provides a process for producing an isomaltulose-containing solid material from a saccharide solution comprising isomaltulose, wherein a sucrose solution is subjected to action of an enzyme which produces isomaltulose from sucrose to prepare the saccharide solution comprising isomaltulose. The process comprises steps: (a) causing isomaltulose to crystallize to obtain crystals having a median diameter of 5 to 60 µm in said saccharide solution, wherein the median diameter is determined by laser diffraction particle size distribution measurement, and (b) spray-drying the saccharide solution containing the isomaltulose crystals at an air temperature of 50 to 95 degrees Celsius to obtain said solid material. The present invention provides a solid material comprising isomaltulose of an amount of 70 to 90 mass% and non-crystalline saccharide solution. The solid material is in a spherical form.

There is provided methods for producing crystalline maltitol without using seed crystals, with good workability, at low costs, and with efficiency in a short time. One of the methods comprises the steps of feeding a first maltitol aqueous solution to a kneader so as to knead and cool it, then feeding a second maltitol aqueous solution having a high solid content in place of the first maltitol aqueous solution and further kneading and cooling the resulting mixture so as to produce a plastic mass, cooling the plastic mass so as to solidify it, and pulverizing the solidified mass. The other method comprises the steps of feeding a maltitol aqueous solution to a kneader so as to knead and cool it, then adding water and further kneading and cooling the mixture so as to produce a plastic mass, cooling the plastic mass so as to solidify it, and pulverizing the solidified mass.
