This invention relates to an antimicrobial fiber, fabric and wound dressing containing silver, and its method of manufacturing. The silver is distributed evenly in the fiber structure and on the surface of the fiber. The fiber or the dressing contains 0.01-10% w/w of silver. The said wound dressing can release silver ions continuously to the wound site, providing an effective antibacterial function, and preventing wound infections from bacteria and other microorganisms. It is suitable for the management of chronic wounds.

The invention relates to dental retraction device having the shape of a yarn comprising twisted staple fibers, the twisted staple fibers comprising an alginate containing component, wherein the length of the staple fibers is in a range of about 10 to about 200 mm and/or wherein the staple fiber fineness is at least about 1 dtex. The invention also relates to a method for producing such a device as well as the use of this device in a process for retracting dental tissue.

A problem associated with known alginate wound dressings which employ charcoal cloth is that the dressing is a relatively rigid structure. Furthermore, the known dressings have been constrained to the use of charcoal cloth which limits the absorptive properties thereof for wound odorants due to the fixed surface area of the cloth. We have now developed an alginate fabric which alleviates the above problems, and there is provided by the present invention an alginate fabric having particulate charcoal dispersed therein.

There is disclosed water soluble algin fibers and such fibers which have antibiotics immobilized thereby. The water soluble algin fibers are produced by extruding an aqueous dope which contains water soluble algin into a large quantity of a hydrophilic organic solvent exemplified by acetone. The water soluble algin fibers which have antibiotic immobilized thereby are produced in the same manner by using a dope containing antibiotic.
