    摘要: An insulating glass unit is shown comprising a pair of generally parallel, spaced-apart glass panes (10, 12) and a spacer (14) peripherally joining the glass panes (10, 12) to each other. The spacer (14) is a tubular structure (16), and may include a particular desiccant (42) filling at least a section of the interior (26) and conforming to the interior (26) configuration thereof to contribute compressive strength to the spacer (14). The spacer (14) desirably is made from stainless steel sheeting having a thickness not greater than about 0.005 inches. In a preferred embodiment, the spacer (14) includes side walls (20) sealed to the glass panes (10, 12) and an outer wall (18) extending between the side walls (20) and having a sealant free portion (23) between the side walls (20) that extends substantially completely about the periphery of the glass unit.

    摘要: A hollow-profile spacer 30A has faces 27 which engage the glazing panes and can be bent to form a rectangular frame. The inner face 32 is perforated at 29 to allow dessicant material within the hollow profile to absorb moisture from within the space between the glazing panes. The spacer is roll-formed from a flat strip of oriented thermoplastic material whose edges are welded together along the line 28. The material is highly-oriented in the longitudinal direction 34 which improves strength, stiffness and dimensional stability in this direction. It also reduces thermal conduct­ivity in the transverse direction 33. The sheet may be biaxially oriented so that it has dead bend properties both parallel (34) and normal (33) to the longitudinal axis of the spacer. Alternatively the orientation of the material is achieved by drawing in the course of producing the spacer by extrusion.
