The invention relates to a pumping device comprising a pump assembly (4) which is configured as a reciprocating piston pump. The pump displaces fluid by means of a reciprocating piston (6, 7). The inventive pumping device also comprises a stop element (17, 18) which limits the delivery stroke of the reciprocating piston (6, 7) in the direction of delivery (13), and has a dosing device (5) which is driven electrically and independent of the pump assembly (4). Said dosing device is provided for determining the quantity of fluid to be injected by displacing the reciprocating piston (6, 7) with regard to the stop element (17, 18) around a determined, variable accumulating stroke which corresponds to the delivery stroke. Using the inventive pumping device, fluid can be precisely dosed during considerable throughput. The inventive pumping device can be used both during applications which required a high dosing precision as well as for a fuel injection device.

A fuel pumping device for two-stroke engines has a housing at least in one part upon which are arranged a pulsed air connection (14) pneumatically connected to the crank housing of the two-stroke engine, a fuel aspirating connection and a fuel feeding connection. A membrane (41) to which pulsed air is applied drives together with a membrane disk (42) a pump piston (22). During the suction hub of the pump at the fuel aspirating connection, fuel which flows out of the tank (1) is sucked through a check valve (61) into the compression chamber (51) located upstream of the pump piston, and during the feeding hub, fuel is pumped through another check valve (71) into the fuel feeding connection and into a reservoir (73) and/or injection valve (5). The pulsed air connection (14) opens into a cavity (13) in the housing located between the membrane (41) and the pump piston (22). At least one spring element (15, 35, 94) acts on each side of the membrane (41). The spring element (15) arranged in the cavity (13) of the housing is supported on the membrane (41) by the separate pump piston (22). In the housing cavity (33) located at the other side of the membrane (41) is arranged an electromagnetic driving unit (90) which supports by means of its armature (91) the compression stroke of the pump piston (22) in synchrony with the compression stroke of the two-stroke engine.

Attenuation of the pressure may be achieved, especially under idle or high engine speed conditions, in the case of an engine, by a throttle (35) placed in a conduit (33) communicating an actuation chamber of the pump (1) with the source of pressurised fluid, such as the crankcase of a two-stroke engine.

A high-pressure fuel supply system and method are used with an internal combustion engine that includes a pressure raising mechanism (10, 20) operable to raise a pressure in a high-pressure portion of the fuel supply system to a level suitable for starting the engine, and a high-pressure pump (7) operable to raise the pressure in the high-pressure portion to a target level that is higher than the above level after the engine is started. When the pressure in the high-pressure portion reaches the level suitable for starting the engine, a pressure wall of the pressure raising mechanism displaces over only a part of its displacement range that ranges from an original position to a maximum displacement position, so that the pressure wall will be able to further displace toward the maximum displacement position so as to raise the pressure in the high-pressure portion when the engine is re-started after the engine is stopped before the pressure wall is returned to the original position.
