In one particular aspect, the invention provides a fuel system for use in an engine having at least two engine cylinders, comprising a first pump arrangement associated with one of the engine cylinders and a second pump arrangement associated with the other of the engine cylinders, each of the first and second pump arrangements having a pump chamber for fluid and a piston which is movable outwardly from the combustion chamber in response to pressure generated within the combustion chamber as a result of combustion so as to pressurise fuel within the pump chamber. At least one control valve assembly controls the supply of fluid that is pressurised within the pump chamber of at least one of the pump arrangements to an accumulator volume.

The metered quantity of fluid displaced by the pump (1) is a function of the pressure of the pressurized fluid and time that the pressure acts on a pumping means (15) of the pump (1). Attenuation of the pressure may be achieved, especially under idle or high engine speed conditions, in the case of an engine, by a throttle (35) placed in a conduit (33) communicating an actuation chamber of the pump (1) with the source of pressurised fluid, such as the crankcase of a two-stroke engine.

    摘要: A compression operated fuel injector assembly (1) for an internal combustion engine. The injector assembly (1) has a body (2) with a bore (8) having a gas passage (9) at one end for communication with an engine combustion chamber. A piston (7) is slidable in the bore (8). A fuel pump (5) is mounted within the body (2) having a plunger (14) which is mounted on the piston (7) for reciprocal pumping movement within a complementary fuel pump cyclinder (15) for delivery of fuel to a nozzle assembly (6). The nozzle assembly (6) is mounted on the piston (7) and projects through the gas passage (9). The piston (7) is urged downwardly by a timing spring (16) so that a valve head (18) on the nozzle assembly (6) engages a valve seat (19) until the pressure of combustion chamber gases acting on the outer portion of the nozzle (6) is sufficient to overcome spring pressure and move the piston (7) upwardly opening the passage (9) to the piston (7) so that the gases snap the piston (7) upwardly due to the increased area exposed to the gases. Collets (20) at an outer end of the gas passageway (9) form a gas tight seal with a second valve head (21) on the nozzle assembly (6) when the piston (7) snaps inwardly to retain purging air within the bore (8) and seal the bore (8) during combustion to exclude combustion gases. When cylinder pressure drops at the end of the power stroke the spring (16) moves the piston (7) outwardly to blow down the purging air into the cylinder for improved scavenging.

    摘要: A fuel injector includes a housing (12) having a differential piston (32) surrounded by a coil (28), the differential piston (32) carrying and surrounding an armature (66) carrying a needle valve element (68). The valve seat (70) for the needle valve (68) is carried for movement with the differential piston (32). An air chamber (26) in the injector housing (12) communicates with the intake manifold and a fuel inlet (22) to the fuel injector includes a check valve (56). At the beginning of the combustion chamber intake stroke, the differential piston (32) is moved by a spring (64) toward the combustion chamber, enabling the check valve (56) to open and permitting fuel to enter the injector fuel passages (42, 34, 69, 81, 83, 85). Upon increasing pressure within the combustion chamber on the compression stroke, the differential piston (32) is displaced to pressurize the fuel in the injector. Near the top of the compression stroke, the coil (28) is energized and the needle valve (68) is opened to inject pressurized fuel into the combustion chamber. Upon deenergization of the coil (28) the needle valve (68) closes.
