A torsional vibration damper, for example for damping lead lag vibrations in the blades of a helicopter tail rotor, comprises a damping unit having first and second members (20, 22) which are rotatable relatively to one another about a central axis (12). The first member (20) carries cam blocks (30) provided with cam follower surfaces (42, 44, 46, 48). The cam follower surfaces (42, 44, 46, 48) are contacted by contact faces (70, 72, 74, 76) on flexible fingers (38, 40). Relative rotational movement between the first and second members (20, 22) is accompanied by displacement of the contact faces (70, 72, 74, 76) over the cam follower surfaces (42, 44, 46, 48) and resulting deflection of the fingers (38, 40). The resulting frictional forces and bending stresses serve to damp lead lag blade oscillations.
