The present invention relates to apparatus and methods to provide a control system for the purpose of redirecting light from a source onto a target. The present invention appreciates that the optical properties of light that is both modified and/or distributed, e.g. by diffraction, diffusion, or some other process, and also redirected by a heliostat, can be a function of how the light redirecting element is aimed. This means that the aim of the light redirecting element can be precisely determined once the aim of the modified and/or distributed light is known. Advantageously, the characteristics of modified and/or distributed light indicative of how that light is aimed can be determined from locations outside the zone of concentrated illumination in which sensors are at undue risk. This, in turn, means that modified and/or distributed light characteristics can be detected at a safe location, and this information can then be used to help precisely aim the light redirecting element onto the desired target, such as a receiver in a CSP system. The aim of the modified and/or distributed light is thus an accurate proxy for the light beam to be aimed at the receiver.

In one embodiment, a method of making a reinforced structural component includes forming a precursor having a crystal structure with a plurality of lattice layers and exfoliating the precursor. As a result, a distance between adjacent pairs of the plurality of lattice layers is expanded. The method also includes wrapping the exfoliated precursor with a surface support material around at least a portion of a circumference of the individual lattice layers in the exfoliated precursor.

The rigid support, such as a support frame (6), which is further fixed to a mirror support structure (7), defines the outline of the inflatable mirror and provides stability. For a defined adjustment of the pressure in the air or gas (5) which is enclosed in the gasproof chamber means for inflating or deflating the mirror (4) and a device for the generation of a defined pressure in the air or gas (72) are provided. Upon receiving the electromagnetic signals, the lens system multiple n times the intensity of the signals by a method of infinitesimal folding of signals, a method basically consisting of an over-concentration of signals folding onto themselves tenth to millionth times in order to produce substantially concentrated signals and to project the substantially concentrated signals into one single optical cable. The invention relates to solar energy, in particular to photovoltaic modules. Said invention can be successfully used for ground-based solar power plants provided with radiation concentrators for autonomous power supply in different climatic zones. The inventive photovoltaic module comprises sidewalls (1), a front panel (2) which is made of a silicate glass and provided with Fresnel lenses (3) disposed on the rear part thereof and a rear panel (4) which is made of a silicate glass and provided with solar photocells (5) and heat sink bases (6) arranged on the front panel thereof. The novelty of said module lies in that an additional intermediate panel (7) made of a silicate glass is mounted between the panels (2, 4) and is provided with plano-convex lenses (8) which are disposed on the front side thereof coaxially with the respective Fresnel lenses (3), wherein a distance between said intermediate panel (7) and the heat sink bases (6) is greater than the thickness of the photocells (5) but is equal to or less than the difference between the focal length of the plano-convex lenses (8) and the thickness of the intermediate panel (7).

Examples of such devices include concentrators, lenses and compound lenses. The present invention teaches a process for the fabrication of glass light transmitting devices having a chosen gradient in index of refraction either bidirectionally (radially and longitudinally relative to an optical axis) or in three dimensions. The present invention further describes the design of several interesting optical devices by particular choices of the gradient in the index of refraction thereof. Such articles have numerous uses in the optics, optical fiber and solar technology industries for the purposes of designing compound lens systems using a single, integral lens, coupling light into fibers and for concentrating and directing light from a source having a significant angular variation to energy collecting and/or conversion devices such as a photovoltaic cell, to name but a few applications.
