A method and an apparatus for reducing discharges of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide. Carbonaceous materials, wood, pieces of vegetation, products made therefrom, and especially vegetative and municipal wastes poorly suitable for energy production, are treated in such a way that the release of carbon dioxide back to the atmosphere is reduced and restrained substantially. This is accomplished such that an organic mass is carbonized by heating in a charring reactor (2) in an oxygen-free or limited-oxygen volume to charcoal (20), the amount of which is more than 50 % of the carbon content of the dry mass matter, and to a gas mixture (30), from which, after its burning and the recovery of primary energy, at least water vapour is condensed to water and the released heat is exploited on a counterflow principle in a countercurrent heater (1) in the heating and drying of materials to be fed into the process. The resulting charcoal (20) can be exploited in the purification of bodies of water and as soil conditioner.

A process and apparatus for drying or heating a particulate material by means of heat transfer media which is brought into directly contact with the particulate material within a continuously rotating cylindrical drum. The particulate material flows in one general overall direction through the drum and the heat transfer media flows in a generally opposite direction through the drum. The particulate material is subjected to heat treatment by repeatedly comining into direct and immediate physical contact with the heat transfer media in the course of flowing through the drum while it is separated from the heat transfer media per revolution of the drum.

A method and apparatus for processing particulate material charged into a rotary cylindrical vessel (12) having its axis inclined to the horizontal so that one end thereof is raised to the other end, and having a respective annular cover plate (16, 18) at each end defining a central opening at its end (17, 19), the material being charged through the opening (17) at the one end thereof and caused to progress along the vessel (12) and discharge therefrom through the opening (19) at the other end by rotation of the vessel (12). Gas for processing the material is passed into the vessel (12) during rotation of the latter, the gas being supplied from a source thereof, via a supply pipe (34), and discharged within the material (38) in the vessel (12) through port means (44, 48) of at least one discharge conduit (42) which is in communication with the supply pipe (34), extends longitudinally within the vessel (12) and is fixed against rotation with the vessel (12); the quantity of material (38) progressing along the vessel (12) being sufficient to cover the at least one conduit (42).
