Provided is a charge control agent that gives toner a practical level of negative chargeability, is colorless or a light color and can be used in a color toner, has an electrostatic charge from charging of a resin powder, such as the toner used, that is stable against environmental change, and has the characteristics of: excellent temporal stability of charge control characteristics, i.e., storage stability; excellent stability of charge control characteristics when repeatedly used a number of times, i.e., durability; and high stability without containing toxic heavy metals. The charge control agent comprises a phenol multimeric mixture containing a plurality of phenol multimeric types indicated by the following chemical formula (1) (wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, A is a 4-chlorophenol ring-containing group indicated by the following chemical formula (2) or the following chemical formula (3) (wherein R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups and m is an integer between 0 and 2), and x is an integer between 16 and 28 in the chemical formula (2) and a number in the range indicated by (14 - 2m)/(m+2) to (26 - 2m)/(m+2) in the chemical formula (3)).

A toner for printing documents that are difficult to chemically or physically forge and that are readily easy to visually verify and methods of using and forming the toner are disclosed. The toner includes a colorant for printing an image on a surface of a document, a fluorescent pigment that under normal lighting is masked by the colorant but creates a visible image on the first surface of the a substrate when irradiated by black or ultra-violet light, and a dye for forming a latent version of the image underneath a surface of a substrate. An image formed using the toner of the invention is readily verified by comparing the colorant-formed image and the dye-formed image. In addition, if a solvent is used in an attempt to alter the printed image on the substrate, the dye migrates or diffuses to indicate tampering with the document.

Toner particles and a dry-powder electrophoretic display employing such particles are disclosed herein. The toner particles adapted for a dry-powder electrophoretic display comprise emulsion/aggregation particles having a negative charge. At least a portion of the toner particles include a surface coating, comprising a methacrylate polymer, disposed on the surface of the toner particles to impart a positive charge to a set of toner particles. The emulsionlaggregation toner particles have a particle size generally less than about 10 micrometers that allows for improved image quality as compared to conventional toners utilized in dry-powder electrophoretic displays.

The invention provides a toner and a process for the manufacture of the toner which comprises the steps of : a) providing a latex dispersion containing primary resin particles and surfactant; b) providing a colorant dispersion containing primary colorant particles and surfactant; c) providing at least one carboxy functional compound of Formula (1) , which may be in acid, salt and/or complex form: R - Z - COOH Formula (1) wherein R is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical which may be optionally substituted and Z is a bond or linker group and wherein the amount of carboxy functional compound of Formula (1) provided is greater than 3% weight ; d) mixing the latex dispersion, colorant dispersion, optional way dispersion and said carboxy functional compound; and e) causing the particles in the mixture to associate. The process advantageously may produce a toner of small size and narrow particle size distribution.
