The contents of the second external memory medium (FD n ) are stored in the memory of an automatic programming apparatus, the first external memory medium (FD o ) is set to the automatic programming apparatus, the first position of the old module (M,) is retrieved from the table (BT) being controlled by the control program (MRP) stored in the memory, and the latest module (M 4 ') is written from said position to replace the old module with the latest module.

The invention relates to a method for programming a safety controller. The determination of the connections and the allocation is achieved by pre-defined function-specific program modules (62-72, 76-80), selected from a number (60) of such program modules. The invention is characterised in that each selected program module (76, 78, 70) is uniquely allocated to a defined function group (54, 56, 58). A first function group (54) comprises program modules (76) which accept input signals to the safety controller and produce first intermediate parameters (M1, M2, M3), based thereon. A second function group (56) comprises program modules (78) which logically connect the first intermediate parameters (M1, M2, M3) to each other and produce second intermediate parameters (M4, M5) based thereon. A third function group (58) comprises program modules (80), which allocate the second intermediate parameters (M4, M5) to the output signals of the safety controller.

A monitoring device for a grinding machine wherein, after selecting a programming mode, an existing program can be modified or a new program can be constructed. Access to the programming mode comprises activation of a first programming level (200) in which a plurality of macro-icons are displayed, each representing a respective elementary cycle for machining a part for grinding. The operator has immediate access, with possibility of display and amendment, to the data characterising each cycle (the data being mainly defined by the type of machining associated with the said elementary cycle and with the physical position of the grinding disc in each cycle). The time sequence of cycles, the number and the arrangement of cycles can also be modified by simple operations of adjustment and modification used in conventional graphics so as to obtain a new sequence of elementary cycles. The operator can also move to a second programming level (290) whereby all the parameters relating to each selected elementary cycle can be defined in great detail.

The method uses a generating expression to derive the new structure and the relevant information to fill that new structure from the at least one existing structure and comprises the steps of querying the objects in the at least one existing structure for at least one aspect that is relevant to the new structure; linking the objects containing at least one aspect that is relevant to the new structure to the new structure by creating a new structure aspect for these objects; and linking the objects to each other in the new structure in a parent-child hierarchy according to the aspect type of their respective new structure aspects. New objects can be created and added to the new structure and the new structure can be updated in respect to objects that have been added to the existing structure after the new structure had been generated.
