La présente invention a pour objet un procédé de fabrication de maquettes et un dispositif de découpe automatique d'éléments pour cette fabrication. Un ordinateur (1) reçoit toutes les données codées suivant une norme internationale de la description géométrique des volumes et des surfaces d'un projet dont on veut réaliser la maquette. Ledit ordinateur commande une machine à outils (15) dont la tête de fraisage (16) porte des outils interchangeables (28), de telle façon qu'elle découpe des éléments correspondant à l'échelle voulue auxdites surfaces dans des plaques (22) de différente épaisseur et de divers matériaux. On repère chaque élément sur un plan de montage (21) et on contrôle la découpe grâce à des capteurs de déplacement solidaires des moteurs (23) de translation de ladite tête suivant au moins trois axes.
