The present invention relates to a new and useful learning system. A computer-based system permits a user to create and manipulate basic elements within an environment. The system then represents relationships within the environment. The system and user cooperate to provide a learning opportunity for the user. As the user makes or reviews changes of basic elements, he or she can learn how different aspects of an element affect the overall interactions. Two specific embodiments are disclosed. In a first embodiment, the system is used for exploring geometric patterns. The basic elements are tiles which are formed and manipulated through operations of geometric symmetry. The tiles can be combined into different repeating patterns. Multiple tiles can be used within a pattern. Also, new tiles can be created from portions of the pattern. Thus through simple interactions using basic operations and simple parts, complex effects emerge. In other embodiments, the system is used for exploring sociodynamics. The basic elements are creatures with sets of defined behaviors. The system determines interactions between creatures or groups of creatures based upon a complete set of behaviors within the group. The user and the system can manipulate the behaviors, creatures, and interactions. Again, through simple interactions using basic operations and simple parts, complex effects emerge. Finally, a user interface is disclosed which can be used with the system of the present invention. The interface includes display areas for creation of basic elements, interactions between basic elements, and selectable elements or components of elements. The interface also includes a set of selectable functions for operating on specific basic elements or upon the interactions within the environment.

Method for describing a thread as a geometric object in a three dimensional computer graphics system. The method comprises generating a set of fixture points defining points in space through which the thread passes, generating a set of one or more segments representing the thread between adjacent fixture points, linking each segment to a pair of fixture points, one at each end of the respective segment, and describing the geometrical properties of each segment. The segments and fixture points are preferably defined as objects containing functions and variables allowing the exchange of data between the various objects. The method allows for the calculation of the shape of the thread based on a calculation of the shape of each individual segment. A simulation system utilizing the method receives update information such as control signals, over an input interface and includes instructions on a storage media and a processor for calculating the shape of the thread and outputting the result over an output interface.

The invention concerns a tube assembling device consisting of hub-carriers and hubs for erecting three-dimensional structures. Said hub-carriers consist of two pairs of half-rings (8 and 9), bearing tongues (1 and 14) offset by 90° along an antero-posterior axis and linked by four connecting lugs (10 and 11), they support radial hook-shaped expansions (5, 6, 7). Said hub-carriers can link two tubes in a fixed or balanced position, can be fixed at the tube end, can be fixed along a tube and support hubs. The hubs support tongues (3) which are positioned folded or unfolded inside the tubes used for the construction of the radial expansions into rings (4) and catching teeth (5, 6 7) internal to said rings (4). The assembly enables the hubs and hub-carriers to be linked by tubes or preferably elastic links and constitute by folding or combining the hubs and hub-carriers nodes for modelling structures of numerous types from a reduced number or elements.

A method of generating a map for image aided navigation comprises detecting one or more edges in one or more terrain images, and obtaining a compressed edge representation of the one or more edges. The compressed edge representation is obtained by a method comprising fitting a geometric form or other mathematical model to the one or more edges, calculating one or more coefficients based on the fitted geometric form or other mathematical model, and storing the one or more coefficients in a database for use in generating the map for image aided navigation.
