A model change device replaces a first record/playback device with a second record/playback device due to change in a contract between a user and a service provider, the first record/playback device being usable under the contract. The first and second record playback device each include: an internal storage unit operable to store a content that is a digital work, a unique information storage unit operable to prestore device unique information that is unique to the respective record/playback device, an encryption unit operable to encrypt the content stored in the internal storage unit based on the device unique information stored in the unique information storage unit to generate encrypted information, a write unit operable to write the generated encrypted information into a storage area of a recording medium device, a read unit operable to read the encrypted information from the storage area of the recording medium device, a decryption unit operable to decrypt the read encrypted information based on the device unique information stored in the unique information storage unit to generate a decrypted content and a playback unit operable to play back the generated decrypted content. The model change device includes a read unit operable to read the device unique information stored in the unique information storage unit of the first record/playback device and delete the device unique information from that unique information storage unit and a write unit operable to write the read device unique information into the unique information storage unit of the second record/playback device.

A method and a non-volatile memory apparatus for cloning prevention is provided. The non-volatile memory apparatus includes an Enhanced Media Identification (EMID) area, which is located in a specific area of the non-volatile memory, and stores an EMID for identifying the non-volatile memory; and an EMID encoder for modifying the EMID by a preset operation in conjunction with an arbitrary value.

In frame-based bit stream formats the data required for decoding a current frame are usually stored within the data section for that frame. One exception is the mp3 bit stream where data for a current frame is stored in previous frames. If the decoder did not receive the required previous frame, decoding of the current mp3 frame is skipped. The invention can be applied for such bit streams, in an archival mode, a streaming mode and a sample-exact cutting of an archival mode. In the streaming and cutting modes, new headers are established. The number of frames required for initialising the decoder status is signalised in the header, as well as a consistency check value in the streaming mode. These frames are used for decoder initialisation but not for decoding samples or coefficients. For a sample-exact cutting, for the frame at which the cut shall occur, the number of samples or coefficients to be muted is also indicated in the header. The invention can be applied for the hd3 audio file format for lossless extension of an mp3 bit stream.

A method for controlling access to content on a data carrier includes reading a first and a second machine readable key stored on the data carrier. Further, a third key is retrieved from a remote server based on the first key. Access to the content on the data carrier is allowed only if the second key matches the third key.
