A superconducting DC bias coil (34) encloses a limb (32a, 32b) of the magnetic core (31) for saturating each of the opposing limbs (33a, 33b) in opposite directions by the bias coil (34). Under fault conditions, the AC flux in at least one limb counteracts the DC bias flux, bringing the limb out of saturation. Preferably, current is reduced in the DC bias coils thus bringing both opposing limbs of the core out of saturation.

The windings are each in the from of a right cylindrical solenoid having a circular cross-section which are substantially concentrically nested. Each winding (1, 2, 3 and 4) includes a plurality of turns formed from superconducting tape. Each winding respectively includes a first end and a second end (5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and 11 and 12) which are configured for electrical connection with at least one of the other ends, and alternating power source (13), a load (14), or other passive or active electrical components. The ampere turns of a first pair of the windings (1 and 3), is substantially the same as the ampere turns of a second pair of the windings (2 and 4).

The invention is an inductive device featuring very low losses even in circuits that supply more than about 10 kilowatts of power. The device includes an inductor comprising a core (300) consisting primarily of a highly permeable magnetic material and at least one winding (304) of a high temperature superconducting conductor contained substantially within the core (300) and in spaced relation with respect to the core (300) sufficient to maintain its electrical integrity, a refrigeration means for cryogenically cooling at least the conductor winding portion (304) of the inductor to a temperature at which each conductor winding (304) exhibits superconductivity, and an input/output device for providing power to and receiving power from each conductor winding (304). Also disclosed are a balancing choke and a circuit embodying a common mode inductor made in accordance with the invention.

A winding for superconducting inductive apparatus having one or more sets of main (12) and auxiliary (14) superconducting windings connected in parallel, with the auxiliary winding being disposed in a substantially magnetic-field-free region of the main winding. The main and auxiliary windings are arranged such that the main winding carries substantially all of the normal operating current of the apparatus and the auxiliary winding, which is located in a field-free region, carries overload currents and fault (short circuit) currents of the apparatus. The volume of the main windings may thus be reduced, reducing the hysteresis and eddy current losses of the apparatus during normal operation, while incorporating a built-in provision to withstand excessive overloads.
