Provided are a traveling wave tube and a high-frequency circuit system such that the product life span of the traveling wave tube operating in multiple modes can be extended while variations in gain and amplification efficiency that accompany switching of the operation modes can be suppressed. The traveling wave tube comprises: an electron gun equipped with a cathode that releases electrons, and a heater that provides the cathode with heat energy for releasing the electrons; a helix causing an RF signal to interact with an electron beam formed from the electrons released by the electron gun; a collector for catching the electron beam emitted by the helix; an anode whereby the electrons released from the electron gun are guided into the helix; and a magnetic field application device for generating a magnetic field in order to change the diameter of the electron beam, said magnetic field application device being supplied with electric power for generating the magnetic field from the outside.

Axially symmetric magnetic fields are provided about the longitudinal axis of each beam of a multi-beam electron beam device (MBEBD). A flux equalizer assembly is disposed between the cathodes and the anodes and near the cathodes of a (MBEBD). The assembly includes a ferromagnetic flux plate completely contained within the magnetic focusing circuit of the (MBEBD). The flux plate includes apertures for each beam of the (MBEBD). A flux equalization gap or gaps are disposed in the flux plate to provide a perturbation in the magnetic field in the flux plate which counters the asymmetry induced by the off-axis position of the beam. The gaps (MBEBD) have the effect of producing a locally continuously varying reluctance that locally counters the magnetic field asymmetry. The flux equalizer assembly prevents or substantially reduces beam twist and maintains all of the electron beams of the (MBEBD) as linear beams.

Therefore, lines of magnetic force, which are parallel to the center axis of the radio-frequency interaction unit (19), can be generated. Thus, even the electron beam, which is generated from the location apart from the center axis of the electron gun unit, can be guided to the radio-frequency interaction unit in the same manner as in the location at the canter axis of the electron gun unit.

The output-side magnetic field generator (44) increases the axial magnetic flux density in the neighborhood of the output cavity (36) without curving the electron beams and thus prevents the spread of the electron beams in the neighborhood of the output cavity (36).
