An embodiment of a method and device for detecting a signal and generating bit soft-output of a multiple-input multiple-output system is provided. The device includes at least one channel estimates pre-processing unit, one received vector processing and one detection and soft-output generation unit. The pre-processing unit calculates multiple QR Decompositions of the input channel estimation matrix. The detection and soft-output generation unit computes near optimal bit soft output information with a deterministic complexity and latency. It may implement a reduced complexity search method. Globally, embodiments of the invention may allow achieving low complexity, high data rate, scalability in terms of the dimension of the MIMO system and flexibility versus the supported modulation order, all potentially key factors for most MIMO wireless transmission applications.

Teachings presented herein offer improved symbol block detection by including a decoder unit in a demodulation system. Utilizing a decoder unit in a demodulation system can significantly enhance symbol block detection because the decoder can produce bit likelihood values (soft bit values), and these bit likelihood values can be used to construct a set of candidate symbol values. Advantageously, this set of candidate symbol values is more likely to contain the actually transmitted symbol(s) than if the decoder unit was not used in the demodulation system.

A mobile wireless communications device may include an antenna, and a receiver coupled to the antenna and being configured to use a modulation having memory for a received message in a block structure. The block structure may include a pair of mini-probes and a body therebetween. The receiver may be configured to demodulate the received message by determining a corresponding set of received signal characteristic values based upon the pair of mini-probes, and determining a decode starting point in the body based upon the set of received signal characteristic values. The receiver may be configured to demodulate the received message by at least, from the decode starting point, decoding the body in a first time direction, and decoding the body in a second time direction based upon a result of the decoding in the first direction.

The information storage is configured to store the results of the detection of the second data stream, and the channel decoder is configured to channel decode a detected first data stream. The estimator is configured to determine a symbol estimate by using the stored results of the detection of the second data stream and based on the success of the channel decoding of the first data stream.

A real-time multi-user detection (MUD) receiver processing simultaneous digitally modulated interferers and transmissions in the same frequency optimizing performance for heavily loaded and overloaded multiple access systems implementing an iterative TurboMUD receiver using tree-pruning, including confidence ordering, power-ordering, and a voting procedure (330). On the first iteration, user indices are ordered according to received powers. On subsequent iterations, the voting system provides soft decisions or confidence values utilized as soft inputs to single-user decoders (340). Voting (330) is computationally attractive and allows the bank of decoders to operate on soft values, improving performance and reducing the number of turboMUD iterations. The bank of soft output error correction decoders produces an improved set of soft decisions or confidence values corresponding to the channel bits transmitted by each interfering user. Confidence values from the bank of decoders are used to order user indices, allowing the tree pruned MUD detector (320) to operate on the most reliable symbols first, improving the likelihood that pruning is correct. Subsequent confidence ordering and estimate refinement occurs until conditions are satisfied and iterative processing completed.
