Systems, devices, and techniques for multiple device and multiple line enabled computing devices and computing appliances are described herein. A device number can be assigned to a computing device and can be unique to the computing device. A plurality of alias numbers can be provided to the computing device and enabled for use by the computing device. Alias numbers can be enabled on multiple computing appliances, such that a user can transfer voice or video calls between devices using the alias numbers. Further, monitoring components in a home environment, for example, can be associated with one or more alias number so that security alerts can be provided to the various computing devices and computing appliances associated with the alias numbers.

A method for managing user terminal identification information is described. In response to an invitation message to establish communication between terminals (UE1, UE2), a first address identification of a terminal, included in the message, is examined. Based on the first address identification, a first number identification for the corresponding terminal (UE1, UE2) is retrieved (202, 203) from an ENUM database (ENUM). Based on the retrieved first number identification, a second number identification maintained for the user terminal (UE1, UE2) is retrieved (204, 205) from an MNP database (ENUM). It is checked whether the number identifications correspond to each other. Based on that, a second address identification corresponding the second communication number identification is retrieved (206, 207) from the ENUM database (ENUM), and the invitation message is forwarded (209) towards a recipient user terminal (UE2) such that the second address identification is included in the message.

A plurality of computer nodes communicates using seemingly random IP source and destination addresses and (optionally) a seemingly random discriminator field. Data packets matching criteria defined by a moving window of valid addresses are accepted for further processing, while those that do not meet the criteria are rejected. In addition to "hopping" of IP addresses and discriminator fields, hardware addresses such as Media Access Control addresses can be hopped. The hopped addresses are generated by random number generators having non-repeating sequence lengths that are easily determined a-priori, which can quickly jump ahead in sequence by an arbitrary number of random steps and which have the property that future random numbers are difficult to guess without knowing the random number generator's parameters. Synchronisation techniques can be used to re-establish synchronization between sending and receiving nodes. These techniques include a self-synchronization technique in which a sync field is transmitted as part of each packet, and a "checkpoint" scheme by which transmitting and receiving nodes can advance to a known point in their hopping schemes. A fast-packet reject technique based on the use of presence vectors is also described.

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system including a mobile device (402) and a content-retrieving agent (404) for facilitating energy-efficient content retrieval. During operation, the mobile device receives (408) a request for a piece of content from a user. In response to the request, the mobile device forwards (410) the request to the content-retrieving agent (404) which is configured to obtain the requested content from a remote device (406) on behalf of the mobile device. The system allows the mobile device's receiver to be placed (412) in an energy-saving sleep mode when the content-retrieving agent is obtaining the requested content for the mobile device and is not transmitting the content to the mobile device. The system allows the mobile device's receiver to wake up (426) when the content-retrieving agent is transmitting the content to the mobile device. The mobile device receives the content from the content-retrieving agent.
