The magnetic circuit of synchronous compensator plant is included in an electric machine which is directly connected to a high supply voltage of 20-800 kV, preferably higher than 36 kV. The electric machine is provided with solid insulation and its winding(s) is/are built up of a cable (6) intended for high voltage comprising one or more current-carrying conductors (31) with a number of strands (36) surrounded by at least one outer and one inner semiconducting layer (34, 32) and intermediate insulating layers (33). The outer semiconducting layer (34) is at earth potential. The phases of the winding are Y-connected, and the Y-point may be insulated and protected from over-voltage by means of surge arresters, or else the Y-point is earthed via a suppression filter. A procedure is used in the manufacture of a synchronous compensator for such plant, in which the cable used is threaded into the openings in the core for the magnetic circuit of the synchronous compensator.

In a plant intended for driving traction motors e.g. railway locomotives or motor coaches, and which possibly comprises one or more electric machines provided with insulated conductors, the magnetic circuit in the traction motor(s) and/or in at least one of the other electric machines is connected directly to a high supply voltage of 21-800 kV, preferably higher than 36 kV. The insulation in each traction motor and other electric machines is built up of a cable (6) forming its winding, said cable (6) comprising one or more current-carrying conductors (31) with a number of strands (36), surrounded by at least two semiconducting layers (32, 37) and intermediate insulating layers (36). The traction motor(s) may be connected to the distribution network supplying the supply line of the railway without any other electric machine connected between, or via one or more of said other electric machines. The locomotive/motor coach may thus be constructed with only traction motor(s) without any other electric machine.

In order to improve the mechanical properties of a coil (1), a first electroconductive winding (39) of the coil (1) is designed as a coil former with a first connecting element (15) to which is secured a second connecting element (17) by means of an insulating part (25). Both connecting elements (15, 17) constitute the connections for the coil (1). A self-supporting coil structure is thus obtained. This coil (1) is particularly suitable as an undervoltage winding with a low number of windings for cast-resin dry-type transformers.

An electromagnetic device comprises a magnetic field generating electrical circuit including a winding (1) having at least one electrical conductor (2). The winding comprises a solid insulation (4) surrounded by outer and inner layers (3, 5) serving for equalization of potential and having semiconducting properties. Said at least one electrical conductor (2) is arranged interiorly of the inner semiconducting layer (3). The invention also relates to methods for electric field control and production of a magnetic circuit as well as use of a cable for obtaining a winding.
