The proposal is for an electronically controllable brake operating system for motor vehicles with a master cylinder, a simulator co-operating therewith, a pressure source controllable by an electric control unit, the pressure from which can be applied to the vehicle's wheel brakes, which can be connected to the master cylinder via at least one hydraulic connection blockable by a block valve, a device for recognising the driver's desire for deceleration, an inlet and outlet valve fitted up and downstream of each wheel brake and wheel sensors detecting the rolling state of the vehicle wheels. In order to improve the brake pressure metering in such a system, especially in the lower pressure range, the invention proposes that the pressure source take the form of at least one continuously variable piston-cylinder unit (20, 30, 40), to the pressure chamber of which the wheel brakes (7, 8, 9, 10) are connected via the inlet valves (12, 13, 16, 17).

A brake pedal (80) and associated linkage (42) provides input to a master cylinder (60) to generate a hydraulic fluid pressure to control a brake caliper assembly (48). The brake pedal (80) has a range of travel, where a first portion of the range defines a service mode of operation and a second portion of the range defines a parking mode of operation. In the parking mode of operation, the brake pedal (80) and linkage (42) engages a detent (118, 120) to maintain application of the brake to provide a parking mode of operation. An accumulator (62) in the brake system provides an input force to maintain hydraulic fluid pressure sufficient to retain a parking mode of operation.

A brake pressure control system is proposed which works on the fluid-return principle. This system contains a low pressure accumulator (9) which must be emptied at the end of a braking action with brake pressure control. For this purpose the pump (12) is controlled for a certain time. In this emptying phase, the motor (13) is controlled by pulse-width modulation. During the phases of the control signal during which no voltage is applied to the motor (13), a measurement of the electromotive counterforce is performed. This counterforce is a measure of the speed of the motor (13) or the speed of the connected pump (12). If the speed or the change is speed exceeds a given value, then this can be accepted as an indication that the low pressure accumulator is empty. As soon as such a signal appears, the emptying phase is ended by switching off the motor (13). In this way the emptying phase is kept as short as possible.

A brake force control apparatus performs both a brake assist control and an antilock brake control without interference therebetween. A master cylinder (18) generates a brake fluid pressure corresponding to a magnitude of a brake operation. A pump (76) has an inlet port and an outlet port, the inlet port being communicable with the master cylinder (18). An inlet control valve (78) controls communication between the master cylinder (18) and the inlet port of the pump (76). A wheel cylinder is communicable with each of the master cylinder (18) and the outlet port of the pump (76). A supplementary reservoir (64) is communicable with each of the wheel cylinder (18) and the inlet port of the pump (76). The brake assist control is performed, when the emergency brake operation is performed by the driver, by opening the inlet control valve (78) and actuating the pump (76). The antilock brake control is performed by controlling communication between said wheel cylinder (50, 52) and each of the master cylinder (18), the outlet port of the pump (76) and the supplementary reservoir (64) and actuating the pump (76). The inlet control valve (78) is opened when both the brake assist control and the antilock brake control are performed concurrently.

A hydraulic brake system with electronic anti-lock control consists essentially of a multi-circuit braking pressure generator (1), electrically controllable hydraulic valves (8-11), low pressure reservoirs (12, 13, 26) for the pressure medium released in the brake release phase, wheel sensors and circuits to evaluate the sensor signals and to generate braking pressure control signals. The braking pressure in the individual wheels can be individually controlled by the hydraulic valves (8-11). The level in the low-pressure reservoirs (12, 13, 26) or the residual volume are continuously monitored and the flow of pressure medium into these low-pressure reservoirs during a control process is modified depending on the control period and the level. Initially there are no restrictions on the anti-lock function, while the volume throughput is drastically reduced during regulation.
